    Patek

Had an eventful day registering my interest in the new green nautilus.......

“We are not taking registers of interest on this watch sir”

Makes you wonder how they know who wants one :-(

It'll be for branch managers to sell on to the greys via a mate or family member and for the vast profit made to be split accordingly. You didn't think they would actually sell these watches to genuine customers

If you have a good enough history with the brand / AD i'm sure they would gladly add you to the list. Buying a Nautilus at rrp is essentially free money and a lot of money at that so the AD will be very selective as to who they offer the watches to.

As GG said. Would you give c£50k to a complete stranger?

  5. #5
They will be allocated/offered to certain people who were on the waiting lists already. Which seems much fairer to me.
It's just a matter of time...

This sums up the toxicity of the luxury watch market perfectly.
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........

  7. #7
This will be virtually impossible to get even on list

  8. #8
Not sure anyone really makes any money. Those that get one will have already spent a fortune on heavily depreciating items.

I know someone who has been allocated one. He is a VIP with Patek and gets invited to events and factory tours. He spends an inordinate amount with them. Job title is CEO.

    That's the level basically

And that is the sad truth. Not generally a fan of complaining about ADs or the situation. Not because it is not justified but because it is pointless and anyone who has more than a passing interest in buying these knows the score. But still unfortunate that a regular guy who is prepared to shell out a large sum of money for a watch that he likes is unlikely to be able to buy these even paying the full RRP. But that is life and that is how things are with desirable luxury goods and limited supply.

Isn't. it just a sad indictment of humanity (and the watch market) that some people want what they can't have which makes them want it even more. From my own point of view, they're welcome to it. I don't see the appeal so at least there's one less person to worry about.

100% agreed. There will always be a difference of opinion but I still expect better from a manufacturer of their calibre.

Agree with post above that AD's have to be very careful regards customer allocations and giving away 'free money' if punter asks for hot model where is making multiples of rrp in the secondary market. Remember the AD branch staff can get severe reprimands from likes of Patek should their punter get caught 'flipping' desirable model for profit soon after purchase. Agree also that the Insta and grey market culture has now largely negated WIS anorak genuine enthusiasts getting watches they want from AD unless have both strong existing relationship and previous buying history, this is a great shame for the genuine watch fanciers out there.

I was in an AD today chatting to my regular contact about new releases from Patek and Rolex. Interestingly, he told me they had had a ‘green’ Nautilus in the dealership and he thought it was more of a grey dial than green!

The thing that gets me about these watches is this.

When I started collecting watches in 2002 you bought a watch, then when you sold it you lost half of your money. (Except the steel Daytona).

If this was the case now, how many people would genuinely be queuing up to pay £27k for a steel sports watch?

Yes, there are lists and there are LISTS. Limited production numbers and being the most prestigious maker is a combination of market forces that make them what they are - very desirable.

I had a conversation with my AD this week about it. He says Patek only intend to produce the new 5711 green for a year. Chances therefore are low of true.

Weaning yourself off Rolex and Patek is a sound move.

Plenty of great brands out there.

For such a special watch, i would think you would need a long history of purchase from PP and a very good relationship with them. A very special treat for the lucky few ;)

If you haven't previously invited the AD to your country club then forget it.

Why doesn't Patek inflate the retail price to the grey market price, if you can afford one you can buy one ?

Patek would no longer have a say in who gets to wear them, and they'd end up on the instagram feeds of nouveau-riche clowns who make the papers for beating their wives and cheating on their stripper girlfriends with their ex-wives, which would run counter to the company's carefully manufactured image of selling the means to establish one's patrimony in the proper style.

Because of the fact that 'You never actually own a Patek Philippe', does handing it down to your offspring count as 'flipping'?

This is what I thought, I guess it’s also true of Daytona’s.. essentially the general public are trying hard to blag an hens tooth watch but in reality they are no longer available to buy as a stand alone watch.

You either spend multiples with the AD over what you would gain from the deal, or you are in a very small select group of people they would like to wear their watch for reasons unknown, either way walking into an AD and asking to be put on Ze list for such a high end watch is completely pointless..

Funny, remember when Thierry said the new Pilot watch 5522 was made in SS and priced quite low because he wanted to attract new and younger customers to the brand. Ofc he didn't understand the market back then and it straight away had a huge premium on the grey market meaning it went the way of all hyped PPs and was only for the usual ancient VVIPs.

The ironic thing is the ones in the shop window they struggle to sell, and the hard to get ones ( that sell for a massive premium on the grey market)
Would not be appealing if you could just walk in a buy one on the day at RRP without all the BS of having to wait 10 years etc.

  28. #28
The demand would not be there if they depreciated 50% like most other watches.

It’s a pretty ugly watch as well.

So I’ve been on the waiting list at the Patek boutique in London for the SS 5711 blue dial.
I joined the list in 2016 and was given positive feedback every year when I asked on progress.

I called last week and they told me that the SS 5711 wait list was dissolved and “it was only an expression of interest list anyway” I was gutted to hear that.

I asked about the chances of moving over to the green dial version considering I had been waiting 5 years. She said absolutely no chance as these will go to their highest spending customers who buy their minute repeaters. Her actual words!

    Very disappointing……

Same situation for me with an Aquanaut although different AD -- I haven't asked in a while as I don't think I'll want to hear the answer.

Hoping for some progress after my next purchase as that's when I'll next ask.
