Just going on the spec sheet movt 9039, crystal is decribed as vintage sapphire...looks possibly slightly raised above the bexel in the render.

Thanks. I enjoy the variation in sizes also, wearing a 38 x 46 mm Baltic most of the time when I don't need more WR and ruggedness then it's a Vostok, also really like my 42 x 50 mm Nivrel. Variety is the spice after all...and from a practical standpoint, I'm quite clumsy, so the larger/taller the watch the more cautious I have to be.

I like the look of that, and a diver style in a smaller size would be an interesting proposition. I'll echo a call from earlier in the thread for a bigger/chunkier crown, though, I think that would suit the style better. The normal Everest crown is fine on the regular watch, it might look a little lost here. It'd be interesting to see it with the alternate hands as well.

    Iconic design from yesteryear.

Looks great on the screen but at 36mm I fear it will come up too small even on my slender wrists.

38-39mm and it would be excellent.

Agree a bigger crown would be good.

Also, don’t get Everest branding on a dive watch ... put the WR there ... or the model number.

I hope this is alright Eddie (let me know if not) but here's a quick comparison with the 36mm Everest - scaled based on the 20mm lug width. I've used trusty MS Paint so it's 1 pixel off being exact but hopefully it gives an idea of the proportions for those wondering what it'd look like.

Look at what I've been playing with

This looks great! How about having a closed chapter ring? Feels like it would centre the dial visually a little more, a bigger more tactile crown would be a winner too

Didn’t notice the 20mm lug width. Smaller lug width would make the watch/dial look bigger (18mm) - just saying :)

My vote goes for a 42mm version :)

But at the trade off of making the case less 'burly', sorry best word I can come up with...an example, I've got a Vostok 420, 18 mm lug width, love the watch dial, the appeal/look, but do still sometimes wish it had 20 mm lugs to make the whole package have more presence.

    Larger crown, great idea.

I agree with you. 18mm lugs reduces the wrist presence dramatically.

20mm lug width would be ideal. Especially for the aspiring Sean Connery's.

I for one would be happy to use a badly fitting 18mm nato strap, with a 2mm gap at the spring bars.

    Nice Render!

Interesting comparison - seems to me that especially with the simple 3 - 6 - 9 layout the smaller dial doesn't come off as diminutive/crowded (which would have been my main concern). I'm hoping this one gets produced.

Absolutely brilliant. These proportions are excellent. For total perfection perhaps a wider crown though. This model will sell out in less than two minutes when it is available.

    YES to 38mm!

  23. #73
Ladies and gents, it will wear like a smallish 40mm watch due to the longer lug to lug length. It will blend in with all the other no crown guard Rolex sub homages out there.
Look at the PRS29A, the long lugs makes it wear bigger than the expedition.

Keep it 36mm, bigger crown and enlarge the numerals on the bezel. Then it would be distinct from all the others, and to my eye, spot on.

    Each to their own though.

But why 'Everest' on the dial, something related to the RN and in a smaller font?

It's a dive watch, Everest is inappropriate. 40mm please as the case does not exceed the bezel and would wear small for those of us with larger than girls wrists.藍

    40mm Commander, aye!

  29. #79

Look at what I've been playing with

I think a ceramic bezel will look *really* out of place, unfortunately. A retro watch like that begs for aluminium

  30. #80
Yeah I agree on the ceramic bezel, far too modern look for a vintage inspired watch.

Big thumbs up for the diameter increase to 38mm.

Massive thumbs down for the relatively long lug to lug of nearly 47mm. This is the reason I had to sell my Navigator. Even a slight decrease to 45.5mm would make a big difference to the wearability on smaller wrists. Especially with an oyster-style case.

+1 for the 38mm size- a diver at 36mm would seem too small for my wrists.

If you look at Steinharts ocean vintage one (3,6,9) diver it's quite large at 42mm for a period inspired piece .

But the larger 'big crown' does look fitting .

If you look at San Martins retro diver (6538 -homage- dare I say) I think they failed with an undersized crown.

Better Eddie, but I still think you're missing a trick at keeping it at 36mm.

Personally I would have to see the watch at 38mm before buying, whereas at 36mm I would buy it as soon as I could, like many other of your watches I have bought in the past, and still have due their design and quality of manufacture.

Shortening the lugs I think is good, proportions look better. I still think it might need a beefier crown.

38mm will probably broaden the appeal.

I had not noticed the original long lug to lug;this shorter version is great for those of us who like to use straps such as a vintage style tropic. The longer lug to lug would only make natos look right. This is great. All it needs now is the larger/fatter crown and it is perfect.

I really want to like this but somehow just can't get on with the explorer dial. I love my 36mm Everest but on a diver it just doesn't sit right with me (I know it's famously been done before but something about this just isn't floating my boat).

I'm holding out for something 6538-esque - that I think would be worthy of the name Commander.

IIRC Eddie mentioned that the Commander is only 0.8 mms' taller than the standard 36 mm Everest, if my maths is right it will be a pretty svelte 12.1 mm's

    I have a great idea....

Get a prototype of a 36 and a 38mm knocked up, go with the 38 to keep the majority happy and please let me buy the 36mm version off you.

Okay, maybe two prototypes, I'll take one too. Seriously, though - I'd never have thought you could fit the diver real estate in 36mm but looking at the Tudor 75090 sub, it's gorgeous. This may not resonate across historical Smiths models, but how about a blue-dial and -bezel 36mm diver? Could even go way out there and two-tone it - sort of a 36mm Rolex 16613. Meantime this Commander scratches the small-diver itch for me.
