    Digital Pianos

I see there is a fair bit of knowledge on here about digital pianos so I thought I'd ask for recommendations.

I haven't had lessons since a teenager and over twenty years later I'm thinking about playing again. About 17-years ago I had a Yamaha P-60 which was really good...graded hammer action etc. I recently dug it out of my Mum's garage and although it is in good condition, it is quite bulky and I suspect models have improved further since I bought this so I'm thinking about gumtree'ing it and buying a new one.

My house is quite small so I've got two options...find something more sleek (although I realise a piano is always limited in size by 88-full sized keys!) or take out a sink unit that is in my office and get a large upright style digital piano. I'm probably leaning towards staying as compact as possible.

Have digital pianos improved in that time? Any recommendations?

Don’t know if they have improved much size wise, but we bought our daughter one a few years back and it’s pretty slim and compact and sounds lovely. Also has all kinds of settings should you want to try different sounds.
Hers is a Kawai and it was a decent price for what it is and fits really nicely into a small space without taking over the room.

There is a wide range to choose from, I really like the Roland and have a Roland FP-30X alongside my acoustic piano. The FP-30X is super slim-line and sits at the budget end of the digital pianos price range. That said, the sound quality is superb, here is a recording I did a few nights back (just posted to my "new piano" thread):

I really also like the electric piano sounds on the FP-30X. Here is an improvisation on the cool Suitcase 1976 - both are best heard through headphones to appreciate the detail:

It's worth a quick PM to our resident music equipment specialist as well.

A forum colleague was selling an absolute beauty recently. I discussed it with the wife but we already have a piano, so I didn't pursue it:

Thanks all. I think I'm going to visit a store and try some out and have a look at size. I like the look of the Roland FP range. Love that one that was on sale on SC too!

I bought a Yamaha CLP785 just under 2 months ago as I got into playing piano 20 years after playing Organ for the last time. I can tell you this piano is phenomenal. Phenomenal. Action is like an acoustic piano and the sound is better! It has perfect sampling of both the Yamaha CFX Concert Grand and The Bosendorfer Imperial Grand as well as hundreds of other sounds that are great but not at the same level. But the CFX sampling in particular is just like the real thing.

That looks really nice. If I do end up sorting out the space in my office, I might go for something like that.

No probs. If you are around Kingston I'm more than happy to let you have a play on my one so you can see how it is for you. I sold a Breitling to buy it and it is one of the best things I've done

Thanks for the offer. If I get round to creating the space to commit to a piano and I'm in the area, I might take you up on that. Likewise, I'd probably be selling a watch to fund!

I heard that when I was at Yamaha. They had invited a few concert pianists to play it and they couldn't hear the difference between a concert Yamaha grand and the digital.
I'd just missed Jules Holland when he was there testing out some piano's. He always uses Yamaha.
