    Ideal car

I'm sure this has been done before but it's been a difficult week. Just a bit of fun.

    Pick your ideal car assuming:

    1. All vehicles are 100% reliable regardless of marque.
    2. You don't have to pay for purchase, upkeep or worry about depreciation.
    3. All cars have an excellent safety rating and adhere to ethical constraints on materials etc.
    4. It's a weekend car only - you have other cars for mundane duties.
    5. Your choice can be classic or modern.

Essentially you're choosing on design, performance, comfort and style alone.

I have yet to decide but my shortlist includes a classic Mini Cooper and a Lancia Stratos.

    ^That's such a classy choice.

Given you’re list of assumptions regarding reliability etc it would have to be a Disco 4, perfect car in every way.

Predictable maybe but the most beautiful car ever made, well in my mind and apparently Enso Ferrari’s,

    Jaguar E type

The DLS 964 Porsche 911 by Singer.

Stick that alongside a Tesla Model S Plaid+ and a new shape Discovery and you have the perfect 3-car garage, IMO of course (but I am right).

Ferrari 330 GT series 2 or a 330 GTS would also be fine!

    Fulvia 1600HF - Saab 900 Ruby - Fiat Uno Turbo IE - Audi A8 - Porsche 928 S4 - Citroen 2CV - Audi A2 1.4 TDI 90bhp - Suzuki Jimny - Mercedes G Wagon W463 Gen2 - E-Type V12 coupe -

With the exception of the Fulvia I've enjoyed the others in one form or another.

Good call with the Montreal Rusty.

    Possibly more to follow.

It would be a spur of the moment flip flop between the following for me:

    BMW 507
    Mercedes 300 SL Gull Wing
    Toyota 2000GT
    BMW M1
    Ford RS200
    McLaren F1
    BAC Mono
Volkner Mobil (with car choice from the above lol)
It's just a matter of time...

Gorgeous, similar styling to the Lancia Flaminia.

If you seek theatre, then you might instead want to consider the rather more dramatic De Tomaso P72.

That's the problem with classics...look beautiful but most of them are agriculture to drive so give me a modern day car anytime.

    Sneaked the triumph in there!

Wasn’t the 1300/1500 just the Toledo and the 1500/1850/sprint Dolomites though?

    I know a guy with a nice 1850 along with a 2l TR7 convertible and a 3.5l TR7 fixed head.

Unobtainable: Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale
Still hope to own one someday: Alfa Romeo 8c Competizione

Would likely park the 33 in my office and just look at it.

Sit on my drive and just Rev the 8c

With your criteria in place, definitely.

Once came within a gnats of owning a perfect one of these for a measly £72,000. The fact that I let it go ranks alongside the sale of multiple sports Patek's in the "Why did I do that?" stakes.

They did a re-launch of the range in the second half of the 70s, including a 1300 Dolomite. Must be Inca Yellow to get the full performance...

I've seen / sat in / repaired / drove a lot of classics over the last 10 yrs or so. In a perfect world, with no quality issues or brake downs, I would opt for the Aston Martin DB5. The one Connery drove:

Under the skin basically a mix-and-match of British car parts of the 60s: e.g. the clutch is Jaguar's. But that will not spoil the fun.

Followed by a Mercedes Gullwing. Simply for it's innovative design! (It was close with the Citroen DS, but that car was already mentioned)

My own TR3A when being restored 11/12 yrs ago:

BMW's xx02 series. I'm seriously considering buying one once my Porsche 914 is sold

And the only car I regret selling: a black Suzuki Samurai Hardtop. As said: black, but without the graphics...

    Others on my list:

    Saab 99 Turbo I
Late Saab 96 in pistachio white with Ronal wheels (rare) or Campagnolo wheels (ultra-ultra rare)
    Opel Manta 400
    VW Golf I GTi
    Peugeot 205 Gti
Borgward Isabella in grey (now very a very 'en vogue' colour)
    VW Up GTi

The original 1300 (maybe 1500?) was FWD and then they switched to RWD with the 1300 going in the short tailed, two door Toledo and the 1500, 1850 and 2000 16 valve going in the Dolomite with the longer tail (originally the 1500 was called the 1500TC, not a Dolomite).

Finally, they called them all Dolomites and put the 1300 in the same shell (My first car was a 1500TC )

The name wasn't new, though, the original Dolomite was this :

I've always said I'd have a Ferrari F40 if I won big on the lottery and I still think that'd be my choice.

I've never forgotten the time one passed us, going only slightly faster, on the way back from Le Mans - People get all unnecessary about exhaust noise, but it was the mechanical sound of the engine that clinched it for me.

The fact that everything is analogue is also a big plus.

If it had to be something newish, I'd have a 458 Speciale - I drove one briefly once and it was perfection, imo.

Neither would be much use for lugging dive gear, though, and the F40 is only a nadge faster to 60 than my Golf Estate!

I love the marque so it would have to be a Porsche, it’s so hard to decide on one car but I think a 964 3.8 RSR in Guards Red.

Of course I had never heard of that brand, but it’s no wonder with such a limited production in such a short existence.

But the formula was the same as for my Facel Vega: luxury interior, American V8 and supercar performance (for the day).
