Im sure Kirk could provide you with one, possibly at the Clitheroering where he went off on gravel :)

I was reading around your hot start issue, as I remember the abject frustration I experienced with my own A/C beast in the distant past (Fiat 126) - and I came upon this -

    https://www.impactbumpers.com/forum/...-litre-engine/

I realise that it's a (very) long shot - but it did seem to suggest a possible solution in the end, something that could be (and was) easily overlooked.

Anyway, good luck with the 930 - it deserves to be fixed.

Thank you for that link. It's not the first time I've come across the O ring suggestion. I think I have already cost PCL so much in labour and parts, that they probably decided to give up as finding the issue would've required a thorough process of elimination and at this point they couldn't really charge for it so decided to cut their loses and let someone else take over in the future. I now know a good independent who will work on it next, but I'll first enjoy it as much as I can.

caught up on this recently and can only sympathise with the issues you've had. Some of the OPCs are truly awful and Porsche UK aren't much better at times.

Really please that you have reached a degree of resolution that you are happy with; I've only used indies for years now and have held off a new Porsche partly for not wanting to go back to the OPC relationship.

here's hoping for a fine summer to enjoy the cars

After reading this I'm definitely sticking to my Honda estate. Porsche will never see my money. I drop my car off to get serviced and it comes back done and washed in just a few hours. No drama, Honda power.

Unless of course it's this in this colour. Then they can have all my money.

Anyway slightly off topic can you post a pic of some drawings you've done? They sound interesting.

I was warned by a couple of independents about PCL, but I must admit I thought it was a bit of sour grapes... I was quite shocked at how inexperienced their service department seems to be with anything requiring some problem solving. They made even the smallest issues into much larger ones. Anyhow, my 997 is now out of warranty so I am free to go wherever I want.

To be fair, I've had bad experiences with a Toyota main dealer in the past, and they are meant to be the best.

If you search my name, Adi Granov, you'll get a ton of my work pop up, but also if you've seen Iron Man, or Black Panther movies you've also seen my work as I designed both.

That's a great result, and heartening to hear that the OPC and PGB at least did the right thing in terms of waiving charges and sticking to the "final, final" timeline. As I've said above, I can only admire your patience! Enjoy the cars (esp the 930, what a beauty).

Quite frankly brilliant art I've always loved that stuff, I remember over 20 years ago meeting a lad in the USA who could draw very similar type of art so with enthusiasm (I was always quite good at school) I bought a comic from a comic store and a pad and an art pen. Even copying I don't recall it ending well.

Anyway on another note I've been introduced to Black Cat and for all the wrong reasons is my favorite super hero or villain whatever she is and you are now my claim to fame.

As they are keen to resolve the issues and “see you right” perhaps there’s the opportunity to negotiate an extension to the Porsche backed warranty for a couple of more years at a preferential rate to keep your 997 within the network and allow them the ‘opportunity’ to prove they can deliver?

Just a thought, I could easily understand if you never wanted to deal with them again.

Hmm, that is something to consider. I tend to always drive older cars, so have never given warranties much consideration, it's just that the 997 came with one. I have a feeling that they would've fought me on a couple of things in normal circumstances, but at one point the service advisor said that their manager was going to be very sympathetic in approving warranty work due to the situation we were in. In the end they waived all bills so I have no idea what was actually covered and what they just decided to take it on the chin.

I mentioned it as my wife kept a 987 from new for ten years and kept the warranty on it the whole time, not cheep but on balance she was close to breaking even over that time(servicing not considered), I recall a broken front spring turning into major front end work due to issues with fixing corrosion and what would have been a £2-3k bill being covered.

The sell for them is it’s a set of ‘golden handcuffs’ to keep you in the network for a couple more years to prove you experienced an exception not the rule.

I stopped off at my spanner man the other day to discuss having new a new Coil-over suspension fitted. Hidden behind a couple of Silver 996, was a V Reg Silver 930. Mike told me the owner originally bought it for £12k years ago and had now decided to get it restored. Currently the bill was £50k. Mike was currently building a new sub-loom, because it’s no longer available from Porsche (or after market). It still needed sone paint correction and interior work, however it looked lovely as it was.

Love it, cherish it, but above all, drive it - but not in the wet on full boost.

I guess it only feels fair to update this.

I've driven the 997 about 500 miles since picking it up and I noticed that there was a louder fan sound kicking in every few minutes on top of the usual AC fan. I realised it was the front offside radiator fan coming on with such force it is blowing leaves and dust off the ground, so there is definitely something wrong. As I was investigating that I looked under the engine lid to discover that PCL have put two dents into the metal Turbo plaque on the air box and snapped off the bracket holding the oil filler pipe, which is now flapping inside the engine bay. Most frustratingly though, the clutch fluid is still overflowing and has ruined another piece of trim under the front bonnet (I replaced it once before, before I asked them to fix the issue). The PCL principal wants to see the car on Monday and look into what was actually done to it and who was working on it. I never received any record of the work done as it was under warranty/free, but they said it was all fixed... The damage is completely baffling as it's clear to see, so whoever did it knew it was there and let the principal give me the car back regardless.

He was convincing me that this is very unusual, but it's really hard for me to believe that I just happen to be so unlucky to have both of my cars damaged and mishandled by them. There is something endemic happening there and judging by the messages I received it's not as rare as they are telling me.

As for the 930, the independent I took it to for the hot starting issue believes he found the cause (in an afternoon). It was a little bit tricky as the actual issue was disguised by a faulty relay, so the car would only run when the relay was malfunctioning as its job was to cut off the fuel pumps if there was an issue. But since a couple of pins on the relay were broken loose, it would mostly malfunction and allow the car to run, but the actual issue is a faulty switch on the air meter, which he believes would account for the hot starting issue. All of this became evident only after he fitted a brand new relay and the car wouldn't run at all. So yes, a bit tricky, but didn't trouble him at all.

Jeez - I really feel for you.

That is just sloppy (again), but good to hear that the 930 issue has been identified.

Best of luck in getting this put to bed!.

    Unbelievable. Actually unbelievable.

At this point it would spoil the ownership for me, the ongoing service is part of the ownership experience and it's just not good enough.

Great news on the 930, no way near the same league, but stopped taking my Z4M to BMW as they genuinely had no idea about the car / servicing, a specialist was a lot more reassuring.

The lack of care on the 997 is awful & agree this cannot just be a one-off incident. There as some issues in the service team & only hope the logs of who worked on your car are present. They need to be held to account.

    I admire your patience.

I am determined to have them hold accountable whoever worked on my car. It's clear it's a lack of care through rushing as once they fixed the coolant leak they refitted the engine, but damaged a coil pack, so had to take it out again. The dents and the broken bracket are also clearly the result of not being careful when they were doing it. When I picked it up the rear parking sensors stopped working, so I took it back to them and it turned out to be a loose connection, which is yet another sign they were careless.

The clutch fluid overflow is more interesting as I asked them to replace the slave cylinder and the pressure accumulator, which they ordered, but I have no proof of them actually doing any of it. The principal is now getting those records for Monday so there will be a lot of explaining to do if they haven't done anything.

It's completely bizarre to be this bad. I've written to the head of Porsche GB and to someone I speak to at Autocar. I think Porsche as a brand need to take this more seriously.

As for ruining the ownership, this is entirely down to this dealership. There are wonderful things about Porsche ownership, but it's this particular group of people which have done a really poor job.

Really sorry to hear all this. I’m a little worried now. Porsche Leeds have a car at there showroom I’m supposed to be collecting in a few weeks
I was gonna collect it 30th March. But Porsche Germany put a stop sale on a few 4lt engines so Leeds couldn’t let me collect it. The car needs new con rods apparently and it’d gonna send some over from Germany and let the techs at Porsche Leeds fit them. A 4 day job they say.

It is a problem with that series of engines.

Not sure if you have had a Porsche previously, but the on-costs can be eye watering at times, even basic stuff is 3-4 times more expensive than other decent manufacturers.

An engine out strip down for con-rods is very major surgery to say the least!. Personally I would look for another car/model that did not have this malady, it could be fine but having had a Cayman previously I would be very cautious of going down this route.

I would do what I should've done myself, and really go over the car with a fine tooth comb before taking it away. I think they are incredibly busy and the pressure to keep turning cars over is stretching them.

I've heard about the issues with a small number of those engines in GT4s.

It’s a small batch of gt4 made in January I believe. Some countries are getting new engines and a few thousand as compensation and an 8 y warranty

If it was me and I really wanted the car I would push for a new engine (not a rebuild) and the extra warranty.

A friend of mine Is in the same position with a Porsche centre in Scotland. He asked for a new engine a s was quoted mid 2022 then they offered a rebuild and 6 yr warranty
I’ve got a few weeks to make my mind up.

It came into them in March. A day before I was getting it they put a stop on it

I had a look through the photos PCL sent me while the engine was out of the car and the bracket which is now broken off was intact then, which means they broke it off in refitting the engine. It's a clamp which has to be closed to hold the oil filler pipe in place, so whoever did it knew they'd done it, but kept quiet.

In a reply to the dealership principal, I told him his people have let him down as much as me. When he presented me the car back it was valeted and in the centre of the showroom, which I felt was a bit overboard, but he was trying to impress. The irony is that the damage and the unresolved problem were there and his people let him do it and now it's coming back to bite him. The lack of foresight and respect for consequences baffles me. The metal plaque they dented is on top of the airbox and can't be replaced by itself, the whole part is £1400. I couldn't find the pipe bracket for sale anywhere, so don't know the cost (it's mounted onto the right hand inlet manifold), but the piece of trim which the clutch fluid ruined is another £45. Combined with the labour costs, they'll be at least £2000 out purely because of incompetent mishandling.

The person from Porsche GB was actually quite scathing of PCL's apparent lack of expertise. I am speaking to them mostly as a means of keeping a good record of everything as they maintain notes of both their conversations with me, but more importantly with PCL.

The final thing, which I was going to keep to myself, but I don't really feel any reason to any more, is that when the principal was returning the 930 to me, he requested I do an Iron Man drawing for his son. I was polite, but very clear about the fact that he was asking me for a valuable piece of art, not something as simple as a signature (which other people at the dealership had done before). I am not sure if he had fully understood what he was doing as people make this mistake all the time, but if I am putting pencil to paper that is how I earn my living and a drawing of Iron Man by me is worth quite a bit more than any free parts they might've fitted to my car as a gesture of good will. It was a very odd situation as he was returning a car to me which they damaged, with the original problem not addressed, 4 and a half months later, but was asking me for a free piece of art.

Asking for art is, for me, the most shocking part. Might just call George Lucas and ask if he can put together a short film for my son.

I am partially responsible for the whole Audi thing. I illustrated him in an Audi in the comic which we then used as an inspiration for the first film. I spent a while deciding what kind of car he should have and before Robert Downey Jr made him so extravagant, he was a lot more subtle and I felt an Audi was a suitable choice, especially back in 2005.

Great bit of info, thanks! Good timing that the R8 later came out as it suited him perfectly.

RDJ got an R8 as a gift after the first film. I didn't!

Unacceptable behaviour - so crass and 'cheap'. He clearly does not understand how you make a living and the artistic/intellectual property associated with that.

I suspect Porsche GB may be similarly disgusted.
