Camera photos disappeared from Samsung phone gallery - how to restore?

I have no idea how this happened but all the photos taken with my phone camera have suddenly disappeared!

Any ideas how this might have happened and how I can restore?

One possibility is that your phone is set up to save images to an SD card, and the card has failed to mount in the phone for some reason. If that's the case then take the SD card out and mount it on a PC with the appropriate adaptor, to see if they're accessible.

Check your Google photos or Samsung accounts, as it's possible it's run a cleanup and removed items that are backed up online

Download or open Google photos and see what's inside there.

As mentioned could also be an SD card issue.

Google photos is a no brainer.

Thanks for the help so far.

I've discovered about 500 photos in my recycle bin (no idea how they got there) but hundreds more are still disappeared and they can't be found on Google photos either. Any ideas what else I could try?

I would see if there is a previous backup which maybe you could restore from?

Moving forward once resolved I would set Google photos as your main photos app.
