Question Russian tragedy – a Vostok that doesn’t tick?

What would you do with a Vostok that’s stopped ticking?

    • Sell it on eBay for someone else to fix or use as spare parts
    • Sell it on SC for someone else to fix or use as spare parts
    • Leave it to gather dust and drink vodka to ease your sorrow

I realise all three options are poor financial choices, and I’ll have to take the Russian depreciation hit. But I'll be drinking Smirnoff tonight to get over the loss. What would you do?

    Vodka option!

If it is a standard model the movements are dirt cheap from Meranom.

None of the above. Buy a replacement movement, have a pop at it yourself.

Completely agree - should be achieveable with minimal tools and a bit of help from YouTube.

I have been toying with this problem myself, if and when it does happen (mine is about 12 years old but works like the day I bought it).

I have had serviced watches, where the price of the service costs more than the watch, and to be honest, I would be happy to have my own Vostok serviced when the time comes.

The only problem I have is sometimes there are long service waiting times, and so it might be quicker for me to buy the same model, new again, whilst the current one gets serviced.

    Hmm.

So I wouldn't choose of any of your options, apart from a nice shot of Vodka. Service or replace if possible.

Bought from Russia via eBay kicked about in Heathrow for weeks. Came eventually and ticked for no more than 8 days
    Dead. £90 in the pan.

Again, I'd be happy to take a look at it for you. I'm not a professional watchmaker - just a Vostok enthusiast who services his own watches and has too much time on his hands. Last few I've fixed for forumites I charged for postage, parts and a small donation to the fundraiser.

Have you tried unscrewing the crown and winding it? :)

Would have been more impressive if it was on your wrist at the time

Difficult, but not impossible, if it was a rifle. :D

Especially if the wife had taken the shot, but I would more than likely had a hole somewhere above my elbow

Would have to be a rifle at the stated power, you can’t even have a pistol above 6ft lbs on a fac ticket I don’t think, the only way of getting around it is making the pistol over 24” in total length by adding a longer barrel and shoulder stock.
