Neighbour always drives past his house then reverses 50 yards into drive!

Strange one but I have a neighbour, lives 4 houses away but whenever he arrives he always drives past his house, comes adjacent to my house then reverses the 50 or so yards back in the middle of the road to reverse into his drive.

The car is a Porsche Cayman S, if that makes a difference and my sons and I have always wondered why he does this.

My eldest has asked him and was told "cya later mate", so essentially sling your hook.

The only thing I can think of is it might be related to maybe the brakes whereby he has to do this?

Practising his reversing or wants everyone to see how well he does it. Maybe just a habit now.

Neighbour in our street drives home from work and sits in his car on the drive for 15 - 20 minutes with the engine running. Nuts

Sensible theory but he lives alone. I'll ask why he does it next time I see him.

My next door neighbour could easily turn right onto his drive but chooses to drive past to the end of the street, do a three pointer and then come back and turn left onto the drive. It's not about a particular car as he's done it with every car he's had. She does it too. Totally bizarre. And he leaves his glasses in exactly the same place on the dash every night. So annoying

I do that occasionally if a bit sleepy after the dive home.
Heater on,good tunes and doze off for a bit.

Obviously, he's a spy of some description & drives past his house to a specific point to check if his handler has left the agreed sign to indicate that his location has been compromised.

That may be a chalk-mark on a wall, a stone in the gutter, a condom hanging from a tree-branch, or a dog-poo bag left on the pavement. If he sees the marker, he drives on.

When he has ensured that none of those expected markers are present, he reverses into the safety of his driveway, ready for a quick departure.

One other thing you could do: check the ride height of his car. If it rides a little low, then it's equipped with machine-guns, flame-throwers & an ejector seat. (Does he wear a Bremont MB?)

Force of habit by now I’d imagine. I think most of us do things which people would find quirky!

If my car had reversing cameras that overlayed the trajectory lines that change colour on approach and reward me with a beep for getting it correct I’d probably do the same.

    Maybe I need a PlayStation.

On Pistonheads, there is a ‘Strange things your neighbours do’ thread. Makes that behaviour look almost normal.

It's to keep the rear brake discs rust free especially on the inside face.

Rear disc brakes don't work that hard when braking in a forwards direction as the weight transfer is to the front of he car its the front brakes that are doing the work. As a result the rears tend to corrode and often get picked up as an advisory on the MOT.

One way to resolve the issue is to use the brakes slightly harder when reversing as the weight transfer is to the rear the disc face is effectively cleaned and any corrosion removed.

Mmmmm......... unless there is clever electronics at play - the rear brake will be limited by the brake balance-bias, and really - the difference in loading of the rear wheels in reverse at those speeds isn't going to make a heap of difference.

I think it is something that has been explained down the pub, and adopted by some............ Like for private buyers/sellers "The car loses the VAT as soon as it leaves the showroom"

I think that he is doing it for the devilment.

I drove a two foot branch into the garden , filled a ziploc bag with moss and tied that to the branch so that it swung about in the wind. It took the neighbour five weeks to ask what it was. I knew that curiosity would get the better of her in the end.

It's just some advice we were given a few years ago when collecting a car from Stuttgart, and it does seem to help keep the rear discs cleaner and less corroded.

Park outside your neighbour's house. When he asks why, reply see ya later mate.

There is a classic thread on PH, along the lines of a poster who wanted to park on his neighbour's actual drive way and could not understand why the neighbour was not happy, especially when they did not own a car.

OCD. If he doesn’t keep doing that something terrible will happen & it will be all because of that one time he didn’t reverse 50 yards back into his drive.

My money is on a reversing camera with 'tracks' on.

Or maybe he wants to remind the neighbours he's got a Porsche.

    What’s the kerb situation?
The reason I ask is I do something similar. The road can be busy (ish) during school time etc so I pull parallel to my house and reverse on for two reasons

To enable driving out when leaving
19” wheels and ultra low profile tyres so driving slightly past my house allows for the swing into the drive missing the kerb!

Oh and I have OCD so once I’d done this I can’t stop

Maybe he just doesn’t recognise his house until he’s driven past it.

My next door neighbour has easily enough room for three cars on his drive - yet the arse has had the edge oh lawn (open plan estate) taken up about a cars width so he can park sideways on across his lawn

What a f dick - it looks poo a d devalues my attached property I think too
