Probably something that doesn’t fit into any of those categories (ie truly versatile rather than purpose specific)
Eg Aqua Terra / Explorer 1
Some fliegers are pretty versatile eg Sinn 556, IWC Mk line but fall a bit short on dressing up (IMO).
Hey guys, if you could only have one type of watch what style would it be? Diver, dress, military etc..?

Diver for me without question
Explorer ii is a good call actually
Citizen Ray Mears is what? Explorer? Adventure?
When I first joined this place I soon built up a collection of around a dozen or so dive watches. Now I don’t have any divers. A few years ago I got my head turned by the simple charms of an IWC Pilot Mark XV. I should have kept it. But now I’m enjoying the Mark XVIII, “Tribute to Mark XI”. This watch, together with a Garmin Instinct, are all I really need. From sea to sky.
I have a complete weakness for Chronos (almost everyone of my watches is!), and anything with a reverse Panda dial gets me reaching for my credit card!!
A watch with a rotating bezel - so mainly diver but not only (e.g. a Turn-O-Graph or the PRS-09 would fit the bill too)
Some interesting watches mentioned here, chronograph I kind of forgot about haha
Something with a date and a rotatable bezel, but no necessarily a dive watch. So I'd go for a Rolex Turnograph white face.
One word. Military.
Simple divers watch for me.
Sports.
I don't have anything in this style, but a simple Rolex explorer/oyster perpetual I think is the ultimate GADA watch. Maybe a datejust 16200 with smooth bezel and brushed bracelet if you need the date.

A German looking dressy one. Lange and whatnot.
Tells the time. looks smart, not flashy.
Bit strange considering I don't currently own one. But soon...
Breitling moderately chunky military (diver) style watch... but polished, only 42mm, and with both chrono & day-date function (so, basically the Chrono SuperOcean, which I already have)! I guess if it had a display back, it would be utterly perfect, but we cant have it all.
Diver for me without question

I’m going out on a limb here. If only one watch - then I would go for a complication and precious metal.
So for me it would be my Calatrava Annual Calendar 5146J - only superseded by a Perpetual Calendar if I were allowed that! Plus my Fitbit Charge4 on the other wrist would be all I’d need (and want).
Three hand, black faced: IWC Mk11, Hamilton 6B, Smiths W10, older Hamilton Khaki, tell the time, no complications, but I’ll let the Hamilton Khaki off as it has a date.

EXP2 42mm polar.

Apple Watch, does everything you need it to....
I will get my coat.
Another vote for diver.
The Rolex 16610 sub is the perfect watch for me. Or the Explorer 1.

Diver, although EXP2 comes a very close second.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
Military would be a bit all encompassing, field watches, dive watches and chronographs. I could go with that easy enough.
Three hander, possibly with date.
Automatic, 34-38mm, decent lume, unfussy.
Favourites include Rolex OP, Smiths W10, lots of Eddie's recent offerings.
Why carry round a bigger case (yes, you, Divers) or more machinery (hello, chronographs) than you need to?
I’m undecided. I would instinctively said diver, but lately I’ve been wearing more GMT’s, and my trusty Date Just.
My Sea-Dweller 16600 is still my all time favourite watch though, so maybe that’s my answer.
I think I could be happy with quite a few watches as an only watch, if I had too. But the DJ2 is the best all round watch I’ve bought in years.
It's just a matter of time...
Omega 2254/64 or Rolex GMT Master II would do for me.

It has to be a diver for me, failing that then maybe a GMT.
It would have been a diver for me until recently but now I think a pilot watch
Diver/Chrono - Something like a Sinn 203.

Breitling Cosmonaute 809 - What's not to like?
Another vote for a simple three hander, with or without date. From my own collection, it would be my IWC Mark watch, because of it's versatility.
Would love to have been one of those people who bought a new Sub decades ago, maybe when they were in their 20s or 30s, and just used it as their only watch for all of life's adventures, without caring.
A versatile three hander with date.
So an Omega Aqua Terra Skyfall or a Rolex Datejust for me.

Best era imho. Well, maybe early 50s to early 60s. Some pretty damn near perfect watches made their debut then. And all the technology you need was available: chronos, autos, WR, stainless steel, rotating bezels, GMT hands, etc etc.
Design went a bit shit from the mid 1960s onwards and the pre- / post- WW2 watches were often small (30-32mm), plated cases and subseconds.
So, hell yes, a watch from, say, 1953-1964 is my ideal vintage. And they ain't making them anymore.
Exactly, IYHO, wouldn't it be a dull place if we all liked the same thing?
I've got some watches from that era, which I enjoy, but if I was forced to choose, I'd take something different.
Personally in watches alone (maybe supercars, if I think about it), I think the 70s has a lot of offer, but I'm sure you wouldn't like anything I'd suggest.
Different strokes...

Mind you I wish this was still widespread opinion, seems 70's designs are finally a thing of late and with that the last bastian of brilliant yet affordable watches is no more. For so long almost anything with a 70's design was unwanted and undervalued, great times for the buyer.... *sigh*.
Anything cool from the 80's pretty much followed suit.
There's really no undervalued decades left now, maybe some 90's stuff but interesting designs from that decade really is slim pickings.
One watch- gotta be good. Gold, manual 3-hander
Explorer II black face
GMT aqua terra
SD43
PO GMT
Super Ocean 44
There’s actually a few I could live with. I much prefer the esthetics of a no date but in reality find that it is a complication I use a lot. I went a long time last year wearing just a fenix 6 pro but do find the charging a pain (even though it is actually no pain at all!)
