Thread: Cellini

    Cellini

Some meat on the bones of the eponym of Rolex’s weirdest sub-brand:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000tdtr

I appreciate the link might be a stretch for WT; but I do wonder if Rolex will ever retire the name?

I read a few days ago on a Rolex forum that the Cellini range would be reduced to just the moon phase model on 7th April. Probably not any more accurate than any of the other speculation, but made a change from the Explorer II / Daytona / Sub rumours.

I’ve owned and enjoyed several modern Cellini models. They get a rough, and often badly informed, reception . But against the power of the Oyster range it’s hopeless......shame , as a refined and subtle everyday watch, the Cellini is seriously enjoyable. Still, they don’t seem to sell . And, in the end, that’s the whole story.

Whats not to like? I absolutely love mine, and the fact that its a bit of an oddball makes it all the more cool.

A stunning watch. I like the Cellini range more than most seem to...one day these will fly! Rumours on TRF that it is being discontinued / refreshed. That will be interesting.

    Cellini

To me, all lovely watches posted so far on this thread, but for me the one posted by Pembers is the nicest.

    I think it’s a particularly striking and eye-catching lay-out!

The rectangular Cellini is the only Rolex with display case back? Shows Rolex can do fine movement finishing, haute horology style. So different and interesting, kudos to those that buy these over the usual.

Glad too see several examples of the rectangular ‘Prince’. I wore one for several years, and my partner then wore it. This is one of the most remarkable Rolex models....18k gold, specially made movement, only for that model, manual wind, see-through back. Beautifully decorated. A quiet masterpiece . But Rolex fans largely ignored it. Not macho enough.
Great pity. Rolex poured their heart into it.

It was discontinued in 2015, I think.

It wouldnt be the strangest thing if, once discontinued, these suddenly became desirable...

...the crown knows what its doing...

Edit: I should've said IF discontinued.

They stopped making the Prince (my rectangle one) in 2014-15.

Out of interest, how has its resale value fared? Not that that is the important part of the hobby - in fact its the saddest part.

I was, however, thinking more if they discontinued the whole cellini line.

My opinion of the range in general has always been that it sounds too italian - not in the image of the swissx100ness rolex otherwise milks 24/7.

Doubt Cellinis in general would appreciate if the line were discontinued.

There are some gems - the current moon-phase and pember’’s watch are a couple but there have also been a lot of so so watches.

Thanks for the link...I've just finished the series. Not sure that there is much to link Cellini to Rolex except, maybe, gold and artisanship. He was certainly 'a character' and I've learned a little more about the Renaissance period.

The one thing that benefits the moonphase as distinct to the other watches in the current range is that it doesn’t say Cellini on the dial - with it’s association with overpriced dress watches and massive depreciation they should possibly remove it from the other dials as well. I suspect it would help with the appeal of the watch range immensely.

A Rolex Cellini Prince has just sold for £4450 on Watch Collecting Auctions. The Buyer would have paid an additional £600 auction fees.

For the quality that was a bargain price.

You’re most welcome. I was interested, in posting, not only in the slenderness of the links between the artist and the Rolex line, but also in the emergence of biographical detail that might be thought a little outré.

The modern Cellini Princes are absolute marvels, and would certainly bear comparison with Edward Piguets &c. Someone has had a very good buy at that price.
