My second Smiths. Was quite pricey...

Goes well with the PRS-36, but came with an entire car attached.

It will be. It’s very solid and everything works (so far!) but a big list of things to do straight away.

    Lovely car!!!!!

  9. #9
That is lovely and a perfectly justifiable expense to get the clock you want!

What a great car for a project.

Back in time my recollection of British car clocks was that they were invariably Smiths or Jaeger, both of which are quite repairable even today.

    Enjoy your car!

I used to have a brown Opel Manta.

I use to own a Mexico brown Rover P6.
My cousin had a GTE in the 70's and she drove it hard. If I remember correctly it had the Ford 3.0 v6 and was fast for the cars in those days.

    Gloriously Brown. Non more 70's!

All I remember about Scimitars is that they have fibreglass panels and the engine can set on fire??

If the needle valve or floats in the carb conk out on the V6's the top of the inlet manifold can fill with petrol and catch fire although quite rare on a fibreglass car it can be disastrous.

Aside from that old tosh - what a gorgeous car OP!
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Back when car seats were more comfortable than your home sofa ;)

I remember one of these being parked for a good couple of years in the carpark opposite my house growing up, never seemed to get moved. One morning it was completely burnt out, I guess arson. Was a little sad to see it in that state.

There's a lot of nonsense talked about Scimitar fires, just like air cooled 911s being evilly dangerous and a host of other automotive old wives' tales. Reality tends to be the human factor. Old 911s are a problem if you don't know know what you're doing; the Ford Essex V6 can go up in flames if you don't maintain it (see all other old engines for reference).

Smiths made Jaeger instruments under licence I think?

    They were very interconnected companies.

I'd assumed thet were both independent, I do know that Jaeger had a factory up on the North Circular road for their automotive clocks and gauges.

Whilst most of Jaeger's automative offerings followed the format of circular dials they did produce a clock that was unmistakably 'Jaeger' in appearance.

Smiths & Jaeger jointly owned A.B.E.C. Ltd. (All British Escapements Company) with JLC providing the tooling. Heavily intertwined, especially in vehicle clocks.

    T'is true.

However as I mentioned earlier, a fire in a steel car will ruin the paintwork, on a fibreglass car it can end up a pool of molten plastic.

FWIW I used to own a carburettor and tuning firm back in the '70's and no matter how well you maintain an engine a bit of crap in the tank coming through and jamming open a needle valve is all it takes unfortunately.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

That’s true enough. This ones been pulling through crap from sediment and old fuel. Flushed the tank twice and cleaned the fuel lines twice. Sure it’ll be fine (*rolls dice*)
