    Cleaning gritty watches

I’ve been working in the garden over the past week, building quite a substantial raised section and my SMP is now best described as gritty.

    Best way to clean it?

Ever thought to wear it in the shower with you after you’ve been gardening?

Nope, force of habit means I always take watches off before I shower.

Fairy Liquid versus rubber watch seals? Doesn’t the Fairy Liquid win (damage the seals)? Or is it an old horological wive’s tale?

I bet its an old wives tale!!! There's a little salt in Fairy, but it is a Divers watch after all! Anyway, you only need the tiniest drop and a lot of water

Didn't someone put a watch in the dishwasher or was that another urban myth or maybe it was just the bracelet.

I clean bracelets in the dishwasher, works perfectly.
I would think a diver watch correctly sealed would survive the dishwashers cool setting.

Rolex will wash your watch for you for only £2,800 or will do two for only £5,600! Insured shipping included, lead time approximately 9 months. Be quick though, these prices are increasing in April!

get a good lather with soap and water and use an old tooth brush to clean between bracelet parts etc. If you have the tools - detach the bracelet then you can rub it between your palms to dislodge dirt.

    from Omega website
    Ref: https://www.omegawatches.com/en-gb/c...-omega/watches

    quote:
For metal bracelets and for all water-resistant cases, use a toothbrush with soapy tap water and a soft cloth for drying.

if the bezel is gritty you can use dental floss gently to get the dirt out and smooth it out.

It’s good to hear you using a watch in a hostile environment.

Well I wore the SMP in the shower and it's gleaming and grit free now. I felt so liberated.

    I do love this watch!

I just can't believe that you could own a Divers watch and never previously get it wet!

Remove bracelet and clean in a cheap ultrasonic cleaner with a touch of mild soap if really nasty. (£25 for a perfectly suitable US Cleaner on amazon)
Clean the watch head with clean water only if possible, a very soft toothbrush and mild soap if absolutely necessary.

The only bit I can't work out how to clean is the thread on a screw down crown. I have a couple that are to put it mildly 'a bit mankey' and don;t really want to go near them with water etc. with the crown out. Any suggestions for that?

Have you tried a brush or some floss to loosen the dirt in the threads, then some Rodico?

Why?? Isn't that way way way over the top?? (or have I failed to spot irony?) Its like using a Formula 1 car for the trip to the shops! Watches have been able to shrug off the limited shocks and grime likely to be gained during gardening for over 80 years. And a watch with any WR will simply rinse clean. If you wear a G-shock for the garden, what would wear for sports????
