Thread: Belts

  1. #1

    Belts

    Morning all

The belt i've had for a good few years, probably a supermarket job, finally died a few months ago. Replaced it with a cheap 'Ben Sherman' one from Matalan, but the rubbish sintered buckle snapped after a couple of weeks. Next up was a cheapy from Asda, the 'leather' has now disintergrated.

Any recommendations for decent quality, but not too pricey, belts? I seem to remember a thread a few years ago on this, and i think some seller on amazon was recommended?

    Cheers

    Brighty

£90 is too rich for me, even if not for the OP.

I've had a couple of Milano belts for a few years now, wearing one or the other virtually everyday.

They aren't as nice as those linked to above/below (depending on sort order), but for the money, they seem like good quailty.

    https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Milano-Me...s%2C155&sr=8-6

I've actually got 3, but I bought a large originally and it's a bit too long for me.

Are you after a particular style?
I wear jeans all the time so my belts are more casual. I find one strip of thick leather much more robust than belts that are stitched together, sometimes paying a bit more is worth it.

A Hume sell good quality belts. My sister bought me one for Xmas years ago it’s still going strong, its a re branded Pampeano polo belt

I have also made the odd belt myself

This one was once an aeroplane seat belt

Today I am wearing a belt I bought when I was 14, I wear it most days and it’s still going strong (I am 40)

I have only expanded two notches!

Yeah £90 is a bit rich, was thinking more like £20-£25

Those Milano ones look worth a go for a tenner

A google search has found the thread i was looking for camdenbeltman was the one i was thinking of. Anyone bought one of his lately?

And in more useful contributions, for non-smart applications, I have taken to wearing these, which I originally bought for Airport use (no need to remove them as no metal parts).

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07D6PW2...xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

I do cringe at the 'military tactical' name, but they really are great and durable.

But I realise it may be totally not what you're looking for since you mentioned leather.

For leather work belts, since they are just for appearance rather than needing to be tightly fastened*, I just use nice leather belts I buy on holiday - probably cheap quality but they remind me of holidays and so I like wearing them. And as they arent 'heavy load bearing' or doing lots of work*, they last for years.

    * depends how much of a typical TZUK porker you are, though.

Get with the fashion, the 90s are in...
These are all the rage with urbanite hipster Londoners, it goes well with beard oil, moc-toe boots and over priced breakfast cereal

https://senecaleather.wixsite.com/seneca-leather I get my belts from this man, Allan Bruce, who has a stall in central Cambridge. The pictures on his website are not a very good representation of the belts I have bought from him, which are plain full-grain leather straps with steel or brass buckles.

Can't go wrong with this. £55 full price but can find them cheaper sometimes. Surprised it doesn't cost more. Bomb proof and two colours.

Can you believe. I was given a belt at the age of 15. (1977) The belt was given to me by the dad of a friend. The dad worked for Philip Morris and was a rep for Marlborough cigarettes, and the belt was a promotional item.

I turned 59 last month and I’m still wearing the same belt.

I was fed up with buying a belt every few years and I decided to research and found most belts have more glue in their construction rather than leather!

If they aren't a single piece of leather they will always come apart eventually. Fashion brand belts are fine - we've all had a few - but if you want something that will last stay away from the high street and go for the family/small company / horse / leather / hand made products companies, the US are great at making really good quality leather belts. I paid around $80 and even after 10 years theres hardly a mark on it and it should last another 20 years plus.

My Armani Jeans belt that I got in Rome in 1995 and have worn virtually daily since finally snapped around the buckle last week! I've replaced it with one from Barbour that seems a really nice piece of leather for £39.

Now you're talking! They're beautiful. Had I not already bought a new one and a pair of Red Wings I might have been tempted.

Saddleback Leather are excellent. Not cheap but the only belt you'll ever buy, waist-line permitting.

    Great!

We've all got one fousty old thing that we just love, and could never throw away. I have a leather briefcase that I have used every day since 2001 that should last me a working lifetime, and I fully intend that it does! It's battered, scratched, faded and just gorgeous, if a little tatty looking to someone else.

There’s BeaverBushcraft. You can buy ready made belts or buy a kit with everything you need to make your own belt.

Its before my time so I would not know, I guess you are a lot older than me.
Maybe I should buy my clothing from the tacti-cool shop like ACH5, nothing says 'a man of taste' like wearing clothes made from the by products of the petro-chemical industry.

I had one made by a fella called Geoff Wood I believe to my size and spec and believe that was in the £40 range. I can't see that belt ever needing replacing.

I’ve bought several belts from this outfit: http://www.immortalcoil.co.uk/

They are ridiculously good value - good leather, good buckles, proper rivets and stitching, no laminated/glued/faux crap. Not a “brand” but well worth the 20-odd quid they cost.

My go to belt is one of these https://bucklemybelt.com/products/re...xoCTHwQAvD_BwE and then I swap the buckle out as the mood takes me :)

I was not going to mention belts way over budget but since everyone else is then this guy makes supreme belts

I have noticed today though looking at prices of these hand made belt makers, their prices have risen very shaply since i was buying them years ago.

Seconded. I bought one from them 6 years ago following a recommendation on this forum, I believe. A really excellent piece of leather that I’m sure will see me out.

I also have this one from RM Williams - that must be 20 years old now. Very good quality indeed.

Quite like the look of that one - do you know how wide it is? Website the shows the lengths but no width. Not a fan of a skinny belt

Go to see a local saddle maker/repairer. They often make belts from new or used leather that are much better than anything you will buy on the high street. I bought a handmade belt in Corfu in 1980 and it is still going strong! I use leather feed on it occasionally but it still looks fresh and the designs and lettering are still sharp! Poli kala!

Helen & Mark Hordon at Beaver Bushcraft take some beating. Good quality work and materials and a range of budgets. Yep should last a good 50 plus years or more.

Lots of very nice ones here, but not paying £90 to hold up my £12 jeans, though those Beaverbushcraft ones do look proper

I grabbed one of those £10 Milano ones yesterday to tide me over. See what it's like.

I like the look of those immortalcoil ones, but the website just sends you to amazon and everything is out of stock

Those Hawkdale ones look ok too, might try one

Go for a “make your own” and choose the colour yourself or watch their video on how to make it and colour it.
