    Limit Pocket watch

As you may know from my other post I’m slowly working through my late father in laws estate, I’ve now come across another pocket watch, this time what looks like a gold plated Limit Pocket watch.
To my surprise I gave it a quick wind and it pinged into life. I’ll get more photos tomorrow as I found this when I left the property today.

Any info appreciated, not interested in value as it would never be sold, just more about the history of the brand/watch etc.

    Thanks in advance again guys

    Limit Pocket watch

Nice to see, I’m sure a lovely memento for you. Maybe a porcelain dial? Looks like Limit/Hirst Bros. started in Oldham, so perhaps not far away?

    These links might be interesting.

That’s great, thanks for the info, very interesting indeed. I’d never heard of this manufacturer.
I noticed it mentioned Dennison inside the back (I think) I’ll have a better look today and try and upload some more photos.
When I opened the rear case, to my surprise the shine/finish was absolutely incredible, only described as like a gold mirror, not a single blemish!

Can anyone offer any advice on cleaning the exterior of it up? Something gentle and I’m guessing?

    Thanks again

Further to the links already given about Limit.

Limit, for a time, used to order watches from other manufacturers to be issued under a brand name 'Limit International'.

Here is one my father in law owned. He used to live in Oldham, which is probably where he picked the watch up. The watch was manufactured by Glashütte and the caseback was all in German.

I posted a thread about it a few years ago, which you might want to check out.

Thanks for the reply, I’ll look that thread up! Fascinating stuff indeed.

Well I’ve managed to pop the back cover and this thing is absolutely beautifully made, it really is. And the sound the movement makes is crisp with a slight ring. Really lovely piece indeed.

I also found another tiny little watch, so I’m guessing he must of bought this same time although to me it looks more
Modern maybe. Need to take a closer look at this one also.

Dennison were a popular and well regarded English case maker for mass production watches. The case will very likely be 10 microns gold plated, that’s what the 10 year guarantee normally means. I would clean it very gently. Assuming any loose dirt has been wiped off, just use a gold polishing cloth to bring up the shine.

Roger that, will review it and progress delicately!
Is this the best place to ask these sorts of questions or are there more specialised forums/groups on these old things?
I’ve found a few more ladies watched that look very old and wanted to find out more on these as well. Would seem he had accumulated quite a few trinkets over the years.

I started here a few years ago and never found a good reason to go anywhere else, apart from MWR for Military and Smiths. Having looked around most of what I want to know about is here.

Might as well put them up here. I’m no expert but some on the forum are and quite a few of us like a puzzle.

I found a bit more about the Dennison ‘Star’ case. The outside is gold filled which is thicker than electroplate.

‘Star: the layer on the outside of the case 9 carat gold, guaranteed to wear for 10 years. The inside of the Star case, which of course was subject to less wear, was electroplated with a thin layer of gold for further economy.
Dennison gold filled watch cases are very good quality and are often found in nearly new condition today. If the gold plate has not worn through, then the case looks just like a gold case, because of course you only see the surface which is gold, but the prices are much more reasonable than for a solid gold case. ‘

This is from David Boetcher’s site. Well worth a look around - he is a guru of vintage watches, including pocket watches, not just straps.
