Taking the stupid and irritating (to me) ‘true tone’ setting off has helped a bit, actually, but it’s still a problem.
As for True Tone. It just kept trying to make my screen yellow all the time. Thank goodness that’s switched off now.
I’ve noticed that my new 12 Pro Max takes really quite dark photos under certain conditions (indoor, averagely lit scenes - eg mid afternoon without the ceiling lights on) - I can tweak settings afterwards but it’s annoying, and means ‘quick snaps’ where you need to quickly grab your phone to catch a moment are too dark as there’s no time to increase exposure etc prior to shooting.
My previous 11 Pro Max and every iteration prior to that never did this.
Any suggestions?
(Conversely, videos are really bright and seem brighter than the scene actually is)

Long shot - but perhaps this is triggering 'night mode'. wait for the exposure to complete?

For dark pics just tweak them in Lightroom
I also have a 12 ProMax and haven't encountered this problem. Could it be "Exposure Adjustment" turned on in "Preserve Settings" , remembering a previously used setting and therefore underexposing for that particular scene?
