I like the Alpinist. Looks as if they have avoided making it overly huge too.

    Case Size of the 1959:
    Thickness: 11.1 mm
    Diameter: 36.6mm
    Length: 43.8 mm

Even the modern version, the SPB243J1 is a restrained 38mm:

Case Size of the modern version:
    Thickness: 12.9 mm
    Diameter: 38 mm
    Length: 46.2 mm

    I wonder why the 36mm is 6L35 and the 38mm is 6R35?

The Naomi Uemura 80th looks great. Really like the dial on that one.

There’s some really nice watches in that selection. I’ve always liked the idea of an Astron but felt they were too big. They’re now getting to a more wearable size.

I like the Alpinist, if they hadn’t added a date it would have been spot on.

The Alpinist with the green dial is seriously good.

Why did they have to add the date window for the Alpinist???

The modern interpretation of the alpinist is great in my opinion even with the date window, I’d be tempted by one.

The date windows on the modern Alpinists bother me because they are stark white and don't match the dials.

The date window on the 1959 Recreation bothers me because it shouldn't be there at all - it should be more faithful to the original. At least it matches the dial though.

I probably fall slightly on the pro-date window side of the divide anyway but looking at the original purpose of the Alpinist, a date seems like a complication that might have been included at the time if it was as doable as it is now.

On multi-day alpine style ascents knowing the date, where there are no other points of reference, would be valuable.

Less seriously...I really like the S buckle on the 1959 recreation. Is that a stock item that's available or is it specific to this new model??

That will be very popular, think I prefer the baby alpinist spb155 though (already own the blue version of this).

I can see a date function being needed for the mass market, but for something that is solely going to be sold to enthusiasts it’s incomprehensible.

It's the usual thing where you think 'woah', and then scroll down to the original design and go 'WOAH!'.

I don't know why they do it.

I do like to know what date it is to be fair.

The 1959 Re-creation has an RRP of $2900 USD (I can't find a UK price yet).

I could almost have forgiven them the date window, but not at that price.

I think I might pick up a 'Mini Alpinist' instead. At least the date windows match the dial.

Aaah classic Seiko! Recreate and add details no one wanted! Puzzled why on earth there is no 'Alpinist' on the dial.

It depends on the enthusiast. I prefer to have the date on my watches, ideally plus the day too.

They really, really don't like leaving their dials bare do they?
There has to be a date, a power reserve our a sub second.

I don't mind the date on the alpinist that much but I do wonder why bother?! There must be demand for it I guess, they can't do it just because.

3 grand and it looks like a Vostok with a badly placed date window

And people have a go at the Swiss watch industry

    I think not.
