Thoughts and prayers etc.
Poor wee pigeon found dead in my neighbour’s garden this morning. I picked it up and deposited it in nearby woodland. I hope it didn’t suffer.
Thoughts and prayers etc.
What were you doing in the neighbour’s garden?
RIP my little feathered friend. You're in pigeon heaven now where you can eat all the cigarette butts you want and sh*t on all the statues of your dreams.
I hadn't realised they are a ferral bird rather than wild bird. I had kind of forgotten humans used them for centuries as a domestic communication tool and now pretty much write them off as a flying rat.
At least a cat or fox will get a nice meal today, the circle of life etc...
Lampoc, you above all others understand that even the life of an otherwise insignificant pigeon matters. Max respect for that eloquent tribute.
We're in a suburban location but have had loads of wood pigeons in our garden over past few weeks. Never seen so many, counted 8 the other day We do put out food but usually only a pair at once.

No, not really a communication tool, except in the military : you need to get your pigeons from the intended destination, so not that convenient.
The real use of pigeons was as a source of fresh meat: when fridges didn’t exist, using the sedentary habits of the pigeon was the way to store (live) fresh meat in your pigeonnier.
The issue nowadays is that they have adapted to city life, eat shit as a consequence and harbour parasites.

I'd rather eat a pigeon that a rat any day of the week.
Pigeon Pie vs Rat Pie....fight!
Wood pigeon tastes delicious. Not so sure about feral pigeon
Yes. They were also used by those young Victorians going for their grand tour to send news home (and ask for more money).
They were used for racing in the 19th century.
I just found that the French name "pigeonnier" did not become English, they are called dovecotes although the Roman name "columbarium" is also used.

Well this is weird. Last night, my lady friend messaged me to say there was a pigeon sat on top of her car, "with a hole in it's chest". Looks like it had an injured wing. It was still there this morning, with an ever increasing puddle of poo surrounding it. I was asked at lunchtime to "make it go away", but got a message a bit later to say that it was gone.
Gutted. We need to make sure this never happens again.

Town Pigeons (probably not the official name) and Wood Pigeons are pretty different creatures.
We never see the 'flying rat' style ones here, but there are plenty of plump Wood Pigeons (they have a nasty habit of flying into windows too, so picking up dead ones is a fairly regular occurrence).
There also seems to be a flock of Doves that alternate between a couple of rooftops around here and swoop across the road on a regular basis.

wood pigeon =tasty
feral pigeon (aka flying rat) = even hugh fearnley whittingstall would not eat the one he caught on one show
I extracted this critter from our chimney.
I thought i heard something in there (for a week or so...) and wondered what all the dust and debris falling on the hearth was all about...

If anyone has a bald pigeon, I may be able to help.
I have a complete set of pigeon feathers at the bottom of my garden courtesy of the local sparrowhawk.
There's no pigeon left, just the feathers.
I wish I had the Photoshop skills to do a head swap
