    Science Based Gadgets/Toys

For my niece's 15th birthday today (fearsomely gifted at everything but especially maths and science), in addition to cash I gave her a 'Feel Flux.' This is a 'toy' that is a great demonstration of Lenz's Law. Added to that it really is a work of art and beautifully made.

With my nephew's birthday in 5 months, what scientific gadget/toy can you suggest? Nothing that he could harm/kill his sister with!

The Science Museum has a range of kits. They're not cheap for what they are but they do stimulate conversation. You can select by age in the online shop.

Your one-stop shop for all things nuclear, and atomic powered toys!

    https://www.unitednuclear.com/

Sorry for the delay, but I knew I had something else to suggest, as I have one of these:

Ever fancied watching nuclear fission close-up in your own home? Well now you can!

If mechanical marvels are his thing, how about a Mini Strandbeest?

    Here's Adam Savage with his.

I've actually tried to order the Spinthariscope but when doing so the UK, GB or England aren't available and so not able to proceed. I have e-mailed the company asking their advice. I have looked at Stirling engines for myself and may get one but as I'll be moving house shortly it will have to wait.

That’s odd. I bought mine from them a few years ago with no problems. Wonder if it’s a Brexit thing - even though they are US.

I like that. Quite interested in the 3D printed version as have access to a 3D printer and it would make a good project.

Quite like some of the more mechanical ones as well but quite a few are out of stock at the moment.

I re-created the Lenz’s Law Feel Flux with 500mm of aluminium tube and a magnetic ball bearing. I keep it at work and it is referred to as Temp’s Magic Pole, and visitors to the department are asked if they have ever had a demonstration of it in action. They all think that it is some sort of con trick when the ball bearing takes so long to come out. For those that haven’t tried it, I would certainly give it a go. The longer the pole, the better the effect.

Although there is not much in the way of input into this, I have noticed one of my old gadgets used to hold people’s attention. I don’t know what they are called though. A plastic base with a battery in the bottom. On top there is some wire framework that holds one or two balls. The balls swing past the base and their swing is interrupted by whatever is happening in the base, and takes on some random swinging. It is better than it sounds!
