Suggestions for a repair to a Sony Walkman , please ?

Another bit of old school kit which hasn't seen the light of day but needs a repair. The fault is quite common but I can't find anyone in the UK to do the job.
Sony WM D3 Professional Walkman needing the main drive gear replacing, as far as I can work out. I can source a part but am in 2 minds whether to have a go myself. These things seem to have a following and am loath to bugger it up myself ...

Have you tried a tape head cleaner , or even cotton buds. My tape players used to go single channel when the reading head was dirty.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
It went like this after falling off the top of the wardrobe onto the floor and so its unlikely.

However it wont cost me much so i will try it anyhow when i can dig it up.
    thanks

The parts are on order, I would like them to be fitted by someone who will be more delicate than me.
