    2 watch collection for £1k?

    Hi all,
I expect it’s been asked many times but at this moment in time, if you had one £1k and only wanted 2 watches (or even one) what would you go for?
I’m considering a Gshock GW5000 and an Oceanus S100 at the moment from Seiya Japan. Both Casio, both quartz, and both 100% accurate.
Before I get the credit card out I was just wondering what others would do, or if you rate the Oceanus, I’ve had the Gshock in the past.
    Cheers,
    Rob

I am very much more of a trad-style analogue watch person, and I would be getting any number of micro-brand offerings within that.
Of the brands I have direct experience of, I can recommend Armida, Timefactors, Alkin, Scurfa, Newmark and Crepas.
Within the limit I would probably have the new Smiths Caribbean (when Eddie releases it this summer, hopefully), A Scurfa Diver one, and an Alkin model 2.

    Im going to go a bit different here; I think for 1000quid;

I'd go for a SKX (say 300 ? from Creation).

Id look for a 3 hander date like the Ocenaus but I think Id go for something like an auto Hamilton khaki (say 500 ?).

Then a square G-Shock Solar 6-band satellite thing as a combined beater/night time watch...

Id spend the lot on a Sinn 556i or 556a rather than splitting the money across two lesser watches. Very versatile watch, very tough watch, works in the office, has the 200m WR of a diver, highly legible, excellent build quality. Personally I don’t think you can buy a better watch for around the grand mark.

Either used Damasko DA37 + Smith's Everest, or just buy a new Dreadnought Voyager - almost 2 watches as you get a diver and a GMT rolled into 1.

just had to have a quick google as last time I looked the Sinn was around £600.... didn't realise the price had crept up so much! Still think it's worth every penny and if I didn't have a 356 I'd be sorely tempted to pick one up

I’ve a Smiths Everest, Expedition and a Casio G Shock that came in well under a grand brand new. They cover everything I could realistically need.

I only have other watches for the fun of it all.

Can we go used? If so a 9F powered Grand Seiko (SBGX061 or similar) then a G-Shock 5610 with the change (used if need be).

New: Damasko DS30 plus the 5610 and whatever left on straps for the DS30.

If we can choose used I’d go

    Oris Aquis
    Pulsar military civilian
    G shock or smart watch

A Seiko and a Timefactor watch (infinite combinations) is what I would go for:)

I reckon, used, you could just about squeeze a Hamilton Khaki Mechanical white dial and a Seiko SPB143 in.

If we're talking new then I'd probably go one brand, CWC G10 and an RN or SBS Diver.

I don’t think the skx at £300 is worth the money, when they were £160 they were hard to beat.
I would go used and buy a Tuna and CWC G10 (maybe an original W10 if you can find a nice one) complete opposite ends of the spectrum so it gives a bit of variety.

I paid £950 for a 2014 SBGX061 full box and papers in great condition off of this very forum in Jan 2020.

Hamilton Khaki King black face, and a white face Christopher Ward diver.

Loads of options there, you can dress them both up or down and they both look good on bracelets or a variety of straps.

Maybe substitute the diver for one of their quartz 2 dial chronos if I wanted a bit of variety.

That could be worth a thought, bit worried about the size as I have large wrists but will look into them, thanks

G10s are 36mm and will look small if you have large wrists and are used to 40mm plus watches.

Vintage dress alternatively a Nomos club for the week.
And then a beater for the weekend. Perhaps a Certina DS PH200m to stay away from the obvious Seiko answer?

Prob need to be lucky on the SH market to pull it off but not impossible.

I have a G10 too and have nothing against them. I have 7 inch wrists and when I go back to my G10 (or 37mm GS for that matter) it feels tiny after wearing 40 and 42mm watches but starts to feel normal after a few days of wear having recalibrated myself to the size. OP stated he has large wrists so I'm assuming the 36mm case will feel the same or even smaller for him initially.

    Laco Aachen and Baltic Aquascaphe.

If I could only have 2 watches totally that price bracket then these from my collection would be what I stick with. The Aachen is a 39mm Flieger which looks amazing and have some well specced optional upgrades for £460, and the Baltic is a beautiful bronze (or Stainless steel) diver which looks and feels substantially more expensive than it is at a bit over £500 and stands out with its own signature design.

Like others, I wouldn’t want to split the cost down the middle, a more costly office/ dressier watch and a beater is the way to go.

It’s tough to beat a 556i and a g-shock square as a tough / versatile combo and they work well as a pair.

An alternative suggestion to my previous one of just bagging a Sinn 556i.

How about a Tissot Gentleman - classic every day all rounder, Swiss movement with 80 hour power reserve, can get it on leather or bracelet and in black, blue or silver dial. £600

And combine it with a Steinhart - the new 39mm Coke bezel GMT, £450, gives you a Swiss movement, 300m WR, GMT function so all your water, holiday, weekend activity etc covered. Two solid offerings, all bases sorted, budget not blown.

If I had £1K for two watches I'd want a versatile, scratch-resistant mechanical sports watch:

    Archimede Outdoor 39 - ~£750 + import costs

Or Dekla Turbulenz with 6Steel option ~£700:

Both as tough and well-made as the best that Sinn or Damasko can offer for a chunk less change.

    ---

To that I'd add something quartz like a "Casioak", prices anywhere between £49 and £99 depending on offers:

Or Citizen Promaster Tough eco-drive solar - £200-£300 - also a hardened steel case:

All of these have a variety of dial options etc if you fancy a bit more colour...

    Been mentioned already but -

CWC RN Diver (has a bit of history if that's your sort of thing) for every day use and a Smiths PRS29 AM (more involving mechanical hand wound movement) for dressier occasions?

Agree with Baltic but id go blue on BOR, and a used if needed square G full metal, probably in gold for Miami vice.

Wow, Ive got some reading to do now!
Soe there I would heve never even thought of, and some I didnt even know about too.
Thanks you all so much for your input.
The Junghans Max Bill Auto look beaufiful and I really like it but may be too dressy for my lifestyle.
I do have large (7.75") wrists so dont want to go too small really.
    Cheers,
    Rob

I have to say for £450 that Steinhart looks to be very good quality...

    I'd go a couple of Seiko's.

Your choice up to your chosen budget.
