Newby! Plus, anyone know anything about cameras?

Hi guys,

Been lurking on here for a while ever since trying to get a watch for some interviews a few months ago! Bought a beautiful Christopher Ward C4 for my interviews, but somehow along the line I've also ended up with a Seiko 5 military style and a Seiko 4205 diver (now for sale!) as well. How did that happen..? :shock:

Anyway, apologies for not posting this up sooner I didn't realise it was necessary prior to posting a FS thread. Also, does anyone know anything about a good digital camera? I don't particularly want to get an SLR because I do a lot of cycle touring and I hate carrying around the weight, so I'm really after a high quality compact with a really big lens! Anyway, hope to chat with you all very soon!

Hi there, leica do some cool compacts! :) Quite expensive though

The Panasonic FX and TZ compacts are pretty good, as is the latest Ricoh R8.

Welcome, and yes the Canon G9 is probably top of the pile for quality digital compacts, but the Lumix TZ series are probably better suited to your needs. The Leica compacts are essential the Lumix FX series, so save some cash and get the FX ( I did, great range of cameras, and smaller than the TZ, if size/weight are important)

Photography and watches, two of the cheapest interests you can have :D

Fantastic, cheers guys! I'll have a look at the Canon and the Panasonic cameras. As for cheap interests, when you add mountain biking into the equation it starts getting ridiculous...

Bruv has one of those Pana Lumix Cameras, they're SUPERB no camera shake which is a must when photographing watches and close ups.

The June issue of Digital Photo has a small group test of what they call prestige compacts. I.e. ones able to act as a lightweight smaller alternative to a D-SLR. The Canon G9 won over the Ricoh GR Digtal II and the Sigma DP1. As you mentioned big lens the G9 has a 6x zoom equivalent to 28-210mm.
