    Email Client recommendations please

I have been using Windows Live Mail 2012 for ages because it worked. Well, it had a funny "do" a few months back and I lost various email folders (and of all the things I do back up, I hadn't done those)! It's now acting rather strangely so I need a (Windows 10 compatible) solution.

Ideally I'd like something free (or cheap)! Also, I'd like to be able to import my Windows Live Mail folders.

I'm reasonably computer literate but email's a strange beast so something reasonably idiot-proof to install ideally.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

The general standard across business is Microsoft Outlook. You can get genuine and cheap licences for Microsoft Office HERE.

Thanks. I think I maybe looked at Outlook when Live Mail first went out of support - some while ago! I think I thought it wasn't as easy to use - and I don't really need functionality beyond email as it's purely personal use.

I'll have another look but any other suggestions welcome.

Thunderbird all day long. First step on the road to ditching Windoze.

Thanks for these. I’ll have a look and see. Maybe Outlook is easier to convert to being another Windows product.

Outlook. Use it for both personal and work related emails.

I started using Thunderbird years ago when I upgraded to Windows 7 and kept on using it since. Does what I want.

Do you know if you can transfer stored emails from Windows 7 Live Mail to Windows 10 Mail? I know where the mailbox files are for Outlook & can import into that as it has well defined methods but I'm not sure about Win10 Mail. I need to keep things very basic for my sister.

Surprised to see a few recommendations for Protonmail, as aside from it's encryption (which in itself causes issues with regard to searching capabilities) it doesn't really stack up against Gmail. There's no desktop app for it either.

That is true, Tony. But you have to factor in the privacy you (don't) get using Gmail vs ProtonMail.
Consequently, I am very happy to use Gmail for most commercial websites enquiries (thus feeding the beast with info on my profile) but keep private personal, banking and those commercial websites I decide to do business with (= I order from).
But then using a Mac and iPhone I also have my me.com address

Because it's not provided by Google. And there are at least two desktop apps - Outlook and Thunderbird.

I wasn't aware that Protonmail worked with either, but I stand corrected (assuming that it does)!

It does - I have both working with a widget called Protonmail Bridge.

Ah - the widget must be relatively new, then, because it was certainly a problem a while back.

I am afraid I'm no help here - I've not used old fashioned email protocols of the sort you are talking about in nearly 15 years - however see if this guide works:

I honestly don't see it as something to worry about - unless you never sent any emails to anyone - the idea of privacy is an illusion anyway.

You are only half correct. While in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter in terms of privacy, it does in terms of the profile they build on you, and the marketing you receive as a consequence. You can see it as a benefit, of course. I don't

What marketing? Good grief man - you aren't surfing the internet bare-back are you? 😮

It's all clean white spaces as far as the eye can see here.
