Thread: Sleeping trouble - any good solutions?

Sleeping trouble - any good solutions?

My mother has had trouble sleeping for years now. She has no problem falling asleep, but gets up really early (4 or 5 on a very good day, 1 or 2 AM sometimes).

She's tried a bunch of medications and stuff like Yoga etc but none seem to help much.

Anyone has a good suggestion? A friend of mine suggested CBD oil (all legal etc of course), I'm tempted to get some for her to give it a try.

    Thanks!

Is she tired all the time?
I only ask as it may just be that she doesn’t need much sleep and, in which case,I wouldn’t worry about it.

Otherwise (and some of these are probably obvious!)
    ...has she tried white noise?
Or going to bed later and sleeping further into the morning.
My missus often uses lavender oil to help when she has problems sleeping
    Try an eye mask.
Cut out blue light before bedtime.
    Cut out caffeine and alcohol.
    Take melatonin supplements.

If you wake up in the night, don’t look at the TIME. The moment you do the brain wakes up then you’re buggered!

I take 3mg melatonin as I struggle to get to sleep. You can’t buy it in the Uk but places like iherb sell it and skip to the UK. Didn’t cost much and is natural. Might be worth considering.

Does she snore or suffer from sleep apnea at all?

If so refer to the doc for help

I do know a friend who uses cbd for this exact thing - works for him, the tiniest of it under his tongue apparently before bed

I have had sleeping tablets prev where the doc has said don’t take it until you are actually in bed.... that’s how good they were....

My brother brought me some back from the States years ago, and it appeared to work well.

I guess it all comes down to what is waking her. Temperature, noise, or just habit. I used to work nights at night clubs and a Casino, and when I wasn’t I’d still wake up and have an extra meal at 2:30-3:00 every day, so maybe that affected me. I still wake up around that time quite often, but fall back to sleep as long as it’s quiet and the temperature is right.

Ive also found Valarian root to be quite good when I’ve been going through stages of finding it difficult to get to sleep initially, without the drowsiness the next day of stronger/prescription solutions.
It's just a matter of time...

As you get older - you need less sleep.

But - a whisky/Brandy/Calvados etc after dinner may just give her the extra - to send her down for more hours

Not talking about being zonked, just setting up for a good night's sleep.

Give it a try - better experiment than pills

Have the last caffeinated beverage no later than 1600hrs and avoid screens in the couple of hours leading up to bed.

I usually go to sleep reasonably quickly but then wake up 2 hours or so later. I've found 'sleep sounds' help, so either rainfall or white noise. But if I'm honest, the only thing that I've found works 100% of the time is sleeping tablets. It's not something I use very often for obvious reasons but they do seem to stop me waking at the wrong time.

It doesn’t necessarily help overall. Yes,alcohol, can help you fall asleep but it can reduce your quality of sleep I.e stop you entering REM sleep and actually mean your sleep is less refreshing or cause you to wake earlier due to not entering deep sleep.
I realise you only refer to a drink and not getting zonked but this can be caused by a surprisingly small amount of alcohol.

Struggled my whole life and tried just about everything. Take zopiclone every couple of weeks just to get a decent night but take melatonin most nights and it works quite well. Been hard to import in the last year due to lockdown and got 10mg - made me hallucinate in the middle of the night so I’ve it in half now.

Where are you guys getting melatonin from? Just tried to put some in my iherb cart and it says not available for shipping to the UK?

    I currently use these:

Thank you for the suggestions so far! Might give melatonin a try.

She walks quite a lot, and is fairly energetic during the day (naps in the afternoon sometimes). Just that getting up at 2 or 3 in the morning is no fun...

A bit of alcohol works wonders for me (not that I have trouble sleeping), but doesn't seem to do much for her.

    Cheers!

Just take one as you go to bed. They dissolve on your tongue and have a lovely melon flavour!

I tried the tablets but for some reason they didn’t work as well.

    Cheers, Shaun

I tend to avoid caffeine after midday and it helps.

Audible is good if you want to listen to something without screen glare.

See, I put some melatonin and other things in the basket on iherb and it wouldn’t let me progress the checkout until I removed the melatonin. Went with vitamins I. The end and the order has shipped (£7 ish for 240 melting 3mg melatonin tablets).

Thanks for the reco though (just wish I could get it to work 😤)

    We call it 'Nighty Sleepy'
It's Night Nurse or whatever your local pharmacists (cheaper) own product. Good glug an hour before bedtime does it for me but can make you a bit dopy in the morning so not so good for early driving.

Weighted blankets seem to be another solution. There seems to be science behind it but I'd get one from a place that gives you a trial period in which to send it back as they tend to not be that cheap.

I see EVERY hour on the clock during the night. As in, I’ll doze of for 30-45 mins then walk up and doze of again after 15-20 mins.

It’s horrid and I never feel refreshed. Never tried anything, just live with it.

Been like that since son’s house was broken into in 2017 along with 2 neighbours’ homes in the space of 2weeks. Didn’t cope with it well at all.

From those I know with ptsd it reads across very well.

One day I’ll rest fully. Can’t wait.

I'm taking a medication that gives me insomnia. My pharmacist recommended this OTC (in the U.S.) product. It's been working very well for several nights, now.

I have a similar issue where I was waking up between 4-5 every morning didn’t matter what time I go to bed I was still awake. I was really tired but just could not get back to sleep. I wanted to try melatonin but researching it I found it was not available in UK and may not be great for you if you are on high blood pressure meds. I tried cbd but that just gave me weird dreams during my sleep.

What has worked for me is magnesium. I get a much better sleep and can get back to a normal rhythm. I still get up some days but much better than it was and I’m far less tired.

I usually have a cup of green tea with breakfast, occasionally Earl Grey, and that’s the only caffeine I have all day. So I was surprised that when we ran out of green tea and a had the lower caffeine hojicha instead, and straight away I was sleeping like a baby. You hear about cutting out caffeine later in the day, but I’d seriously consider cutting it out altogether, or giving hojicha a try (Fennel is also good, as is Redbush).
