£8.00 in 1971 for a 1964 Kerry Capitano moped. Absolutely dreadful. It was to peddle up every incline. Downhill, it was lethal. Happy days.

I purchased my mother’s old A reg Fiesta 1.3 Ghia. I was clearly spoiled as had 2 wing mirrors, a removable sunroof and headrests.

Manual choke, ah they were the days! Mine never liked a warm start without a bit of choke.

Loved learning to drive in a car that didn’t handle all that great, the things I used to be able to overtake through sheer stupidity!

Insurance was £1,300 as didn’t realise that the bigger engine & ghia spec made such an old car more desirable.

Fond memories of that car, although having to fill the rear wash wipe up in the boot always struck me as strange vs how they do it these days.

A four-year-old 1984 Escort 1.3L for me, was a repaired Cat D sourced from my dad’s salvage mate for around £1,200 iirc.

Steel wheels, windy windows, massive clock instead of a rev counter, 4-speed box and in a horrendous non-metallic baby blue colour.

EDIT probably Nordic Blue but there was nothing Scandanavian or sexy about it!

A burgundy Ford Fiesta Popular Plus 1.6 diesel in 1987, courtesy of my employer, the most basic car I've ever had. The only concession to convenience was a Sharp radio cassette that I was allowed to have installed (as long as I purchased the centre console which had to remain in the car when it was returned).

In those days my mileage was inter-galactic, East Anglia was a big place!! After 115k miles in two years, driven like it was stolen, it was passed on to a graduate in accounts.

I had one of those in blue, I paid £10 for it. You didn't see too many of those around even back in the 70's!

£30 for an Austin A35. Cost me £60 to insure it - 3rd Party only! Ran it for two years, took me all round the country. Lots of happy memories.

I had a A30 and A35 very economical, bit of a squeeze though getting us all in :)

Thinking back I had a few motors over the years including, Cortinas mk1/2/3/4, Consul, Anglia's (passed my test in one 1966), Mini, Viva (that was poor!!) 1953 Beetle (sold it early 70s for £30), Hillman Minx first decent quality motor I owned and I paid £200 for it which was by far the most expensive car I had bought at the time mid 70s.

From the 90s a couple of Sierra's, Vauxhall Caviler, MK4 Golf, BMW, Toyota Avensis, Toyota Avensis Tourer.

For a trial period I even had a car that had been welded together from two half's but it was not for me.

Always wanted to buy a motor with my heart but never did :( and at the end of the day cars have only really been a means of transport to me, reliability and safe and i'm pretty happy (ish).

I did like this in the SC the other day, would have been a fun "toy":) Low mileage MX-5 2.0 SE

    £1100 for a 1.3 Mk2 Golf. Mint condition 3 door, non sunroof.

This was around 2010/2011, easily the oldest car of all my friends but i couldn't care less. Did over 30,000 miles in it before it blew up. I had it fixed up then sold it on, oh I regret that!

    I had an Escort.

    No, not fighter.

No, not the other kind either.

One of Dagenham's finest early 80s machines.

1.6. Quite quick relatively speaking. Dark blue - five door.

    I quite liked it.

Mind you, I also lusted after a Marina Coupe TC...so I know nothing!

BTW - It didn't look like this by the time I had finished with it....got T-boned at a junction near Southend on Sea airport by a one-armed man with a hook.

My first transport was a 1967 Mini 850, bought in 1975 for £295. I was 17, I’d been working full- time for 12 months and worked in a bar at night to save enough money to buy the car. Kept it just over 12 months, hated the damned thing, it was slow, noisy, rusty and had a thirst for oil. Most of my friends bought old cars and learned to fix them, parents rarely bought cars for kids in those days, certainly not where I lived.

I remember paying around £65 to insure the car, my take- home pay was just over £100/month, the insurance was expensive but nowhere near as bad as current charges for young drivers. Oil was bought from the local supermarket at £1.25 a gallon can, which lasted about 5-6 weeks.

Can't remember what my Puch Maxi cost for my 16th birthday (1980) but for my first car I was given an £800 loan by my father. Bought a Triumph Dolomite Sprint. Red with a black vinyl roof.

About £1200 for my first car - it was a 1978 orange Ford Fiesta 1300S - very much like this...

Not my pic - as mine ended it's life going sideways for about 50 yards after being T-boned by a stolen Cortina.
A common hazard living in Salford in the 1980's.

Shame, as I really liked that car & planned to take it to uni with me.

£60 for a Vauxhall Victor estate with a bench front seat. Before it would start you had to disconnect the fuel line and suck the petrol through to the carb.

My second one was that same colour and an auto to boot! Very low mileage and swapped it for my Cortina estate.

It started my realisation that auto was the way to go.

£500 Triumph Dolomite 1300, in Inca Yellow.

The thinking man’s BMW. Made it to 97 mph going down a hill on the M4 before one of the pistons decided to stay behind for a bit of sightseeing and the car turned into a fast lane smoke bomb.

Used to take turns driving a 20 mile journey to work with a couple of guys back in the day. One had a yellow Dolomite sprint which was pretty fast back then, and the other had a blue MK1 escort estate with lots of 'Rally' extras. Both drove much too fast really but it was the Escort driver 'sawing' the wheel around fast bends which was scariest. Had to have a word in the end about not wanting to die on the way to work!
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

The first that "I bought" was this 1963 VW Karmann Ghia, for which I paid about $800 in 1967. My late mom is standing beside it in 1968 at our family home in Sioux City, Iowa. The Ghia replaced a 1956 Buick I inherited from my parents in 1963 (sold for junk for $35).

Proper mopeds that you could theoretically pedal!

Mine had pedals too but my mate had the next years model with proper motorbike pedals and the 30mph restriction. It was still quicker than my unrestricted model though.
