its quite simply what the Bearpit is there for. Enjoy it for what it is or avoid it completely is my advice. it's great in context.

For me, that's true: I'm only a 'lightweight' follower of F1 but with Lando in it (son of a distant friend) my interest has grown, however the incessant droning on about LH put me off the G&D thread.

(I do think highly of LH, but the god-like fawning/utter dislike polarisation of him put me off in there).

If you don't allow for the "bearpit" it will spill over into other parts of the forum. When the pit gets so slow only the pack have each other to denigrate they like to strike out in other parts of the forum it's just better to keep them busy in their lair.

I guess we all have a number of sub forums that we're not interested in, for me it's Zenno, BMW, leather and rubber strap ons, mods and wreckers spring to mind, so guess what - I just don't go there, I accept that they exist, I just don't get my pants in a twist about it.

The BP is/was an inspired idea by the gaffer, not so much of a place to pop into, call someone a c**t and run away, It's an information gold mine, people far smarter than many of us provide arguments and counter arguments backed up with facts and evidence far removed from the usual sources, those who's arguments ''don't have a leg to stand on'' generally shrivel and slink out only to resurface biannually to moan about how horrid the BP is, sure it's robust and those who contribute ''take no prisoners'' when it comes to ''hard facts'', but TZ would be much the poorer without it.

Many thanks to Lampoc for this guide.

Political discussion is highly polarized ’most everywhere. Doesn’t matter whether the platform is moderated or if it’s regular joes or big league politicians talking. Just look at twitter for confirmation. I wouldn’t blame The Bear Pit. Just sign o’ the times. I will not follow or participate in political discussions anywhere. I fear the world may be a lesser place because of it, but my personal wellbeing is immensely greater. The world is full of things that’ll turn my stomach. I try to avoid them as much as I can. I personally have found TBP to be mostly a pleasant place with several threads that are proper gems.

Very true, a small handful have already crawled out onto this thread which has mildly surprised me although it shouldn't have. They are merely the foot soldiers though, the muppets-in-chief are still quiet.

Irony overload, bloke who admits he had to ask Eddie to ban him from the BP as he couldn't trust himself not to take a peak, whaddya know jumps into thread in the G and D to have a fulsome moan about, yup you guessed it the BP...And even cuter, uses the thread in the G and D to name call and bait the so called BP meanies.

pah took too long composing and Chris beat me to it.

Refering to people as bullies, muppets, cabalists, suggestions of sad lives etc...too funny when you suggested others in the BP are passive aggressive and in the G AND D, effectively from behind Mammys skirt.

Not sure it has gone down hill yet tbh, 2 days in, still at the good natured banter phase I reckon, benefits of the doubt all round and BP meanies showing humour and tolerance.

This is a very good point. A while ago a I sent a PM to a fairly new member looking for some service recommendations, the member replied questioning my advice because another member with a post count in the thousands higher had suggested something else and had specifically recommended against using who I had suggested. I pointed the member to this higher posters post list and you had to go back four pages to find a post that was in any way watch related. All in favour of the bear pit, although I tend to avoid it, but maybe posts there shouldn’t add to the total post count.

There are also high post count members with the vast proportion in SC and H&V (and for non watch related items).

Personally I feel that true diligence using the fairly straightforward search function is the answer. Post count doesn't really mean anything, there are some specialists here who keep pretty quiet.

Newcomers don't have access to the BP.

FTFY. However, I agree that this topic is too inflammatory to be in the G&D.

There's no correlation between quality of posts and number of posts, due diligence is always recommended!

    Wouldn't take much guessing.

Talking about comedy, the Trump thread has become a bit one-sided - could I invite some of our resident right-wing members to return and take up their supportive stance for the erstwhile commander-in-chief again? You know who you are.

I remember very well when you posted a message from one of your stateside friends who said it was Antifa that stormed the Capitol and you claimed that was a balanced view.

    Hilarity ensued.

It’s a good melting pot of views, but can get a bit above itself, especially with the usual “self righteous” suspects.

Luckily it’s just keyboard stuff at the end of the day, and of no “real life” importance, but extremely entertaining at times.

I did wonder if the thread was merely a case of 'bear baiting' - OP lit the blue touch paper and stood back... a mile or so.

Bear Pit relationships ... how else would the regular participants get their rocks off? Beats me how some of them find time to earn a living!

In my early days here when I had BP access I got in some toxic arguments, I then avoided it for a few years, but have since returned and I must say I enjoy it.

Yes there is swearing, arguing and insults which in most part I find amusing but I don’t tend to get dragged or baited in to this side of the BP no more.
I do find names that you see elsewhere on the forum that frequent the BP let a lot more of their character to come though, quite often for the positive.

Another outlook, I think it’s an escape to vent a lot of things you would like to say in your own life but either you can’t for fear of insulting, upsetting family and friends or putting your career at risk, being private from search engines it’s nice to know your views are only kept in that space too.

Take it with a pinch of salt, don’t rise to the bait and you might find it’s a better community than many make out..
