    Puppies Probable

Just wanted to share that my German Short Haired pointers will very likely be having puppies on around 10 April. First time breeder and super excited. Any advise, or interest in the pups is welcome !

Sorry, I thought this was another Toyah Wilcox thread ... Seriously though, I will ask my wife, she's on Champ Dogs every day.

Advice: Do you homework on potential buyers, vet them (household, etc) as being suitable for ownership. Puppies are the new fad with lockdown, with everyone (worthy or not) wanting a dog, so additional vetting even more important. You also need to consider how potential owners' situation could change post-lockdown, etc (a dog is for life).

    P.S. Congratulations !

P.P.S. German short-haired pointers are my eldest daughter's favourite - just a bit early for her though (final year vet student - loves dogs, attends Crufts every year), and we're too far away. Good luck !

I would be very interested in a GSP Bitch, things are so crazy in the puppy world currently, especially the prices people are asking.

I already have a 10 year old Weimaraner bitch and am looking for another dog.

    Cheers

Those ears! Those enormous paws! That gorgeous velvet-like fur! They’ve such lovely eyes too! Never kept a Weimaraner, though I could be tempted.

She's as soft as butter, sometimes not sure who rules the roost though!

different days bring different activities. Some days they get 30 minutes, most days an hour ish and some days - all day !! They do respond well to a lot of exercise/activity !

No advise, just swinging by to say congrats and I'm jealous. I'd love to add a GSP to my pack of 2 English Springers.

Them enjoying some bird seed on a recent walk.

That sounds reasonable, the over two hours a day was the bit I’d struggle with!

It’s crazy out there. I know someone who has downsized, lives alone in a semi rural setting and will have all day to devote to a dog. But he’s not made of money so puppies are too expensive and rescues are so thin on the ground. It is really hard for him to find anything that isn’t a basket case. Meanwhile, nearly everyday I witness some latest episode of unruly or downright aggressive dog behaviour while I’m out with my guy. I can’t generalise because it’s a small percentage but it’s clear some owners are not putting the effort in even when they have the time. That can’t end well. Hopefully the market will self correct.

    Yep. Sad I think.

My foremost concern is the welfare of the animal and suitability of the owner. Price trends when it comes to pets are less important to me.

congrats on the expectant litter; would have had someone for you had it been a few weeks earlier as my Ex lost her GSP at the age of eleven, but has just found a pup.

They are really in demand and I can only concur with others about vetting buyers for suitability.

also be careful about the amount of info you advertise/make available to enquiries as the amount of dog/puppy theft is quite alarming.

People don't realise the amount of effort that a HPR breed require and just think they look cute. Then there are the lockdown owners who have no idea what they will do when they go back to work. My Weimy is approaching 11 and the breeder interrogated me for about 4 hours before agreeing to let me even have a look at one of her babies!!

I've been tempted to get another but don't think it would be fair on mine at his age; maybe next time I'll get 2 from the off; hopefully not for a few years yet.

I'm lucky enough to be self-employed and mine came with me to work from day one, never had any separation anxiety issues and still don't. Good puppy socialisation and training with other dogs, mixed in with kids and babies alike. So well used to human contact and most environments.

It was always going to be hard work raising a dog, but the the effort put it has certainly paid off and feels very rewarding in itself, plus the upside of a wagging tail!
