Thread: Antikythera mechanism

    Antikythera mechanism

If you've ever wondered about the Antikythera mechanism then these videos will tell you pretty much everything.

If, on the other hand, you've never heard of the Antikythera mechanism then these videos will also tell you pretty much everything.

The first is slightly more for the layman (and the best place to start)

The second is more technical but very informative

    Enjoy!

Very interesting, have you seen the clickspring videos where he recreates a full mechanism from scratch?
I could watch his stuff all day, very talented bloke.

Been meaning to start a lego project making one.

A few folk have done it, but the better ones need custom gears which I don't want to do.

    It's a super interesting thing.

Great stuff, the original mechanical calculator. I have an Antikythera emulator running on this programmable Timex Data Link.

The complexity of the engineering is stunning. The app is great by the way. I'm just trying to get my head around the cycles and adjustments.

As a half Greek I have been following this story for years. I still find it hard to accept that we haven't found anything else remotely similar to it from that date.

Yeah - that is odd - and few mentions of such devices in Greek Literature. You'd think hipster ancient Greeks would be showing off their new Mechanisms! But the most amazing thing is the precision of the technology required to make one - which seemed to get lost.

The correction which allowed the planets' forward movement to go retrograde is amazing.

This and the Dead Sea Scrolls must surely be the best finds of the C20th

(Pedant disclaimer: yes, I am aware that 1900 is the last year of the C19th, thanks.)

The original manufacturers clearly restricted availability to artificially inflate value. I expect that moving up the waiting list took decades and involved buying a number of Archimedes' screws and katapeltikons to butter up the Antikythera Dealer.

It's an Omega, you can see the Ω on the dial.
