    Orthotics / Insoles for Supination

Over the last few years I've become keener and keener on walking for leisure and exercise, but I've come to the conclusion that I supinate while walking.

The most obvious pointer is the wear pattern on my shoes, but I also suffer with some of the typical discomfort associated with under-pronation, especially after repeated or longer walks, and I can often turn an ankle on even the most slightly uneven surface.

I guess some kind of insoles / orthotics might be helpful but there's a bewildering array available online and no obvious way to determine what type might be suitable.

Does anyone have any experience or advice in this area? Is it a case of just trying a few and seeing whether they help, or should I be seeking out a specialist of some sort?

I know we have some keen runners and walkers in the membership, so any informed input would be very welcome - TIA.

If you think it’s a real issue, then see a specialist. My ex, a senior physio, always wore hers for running/walking and had them made for her after consultations and running and gait analysis - quite a few running shoe shops have a similar machine set up these days to check your foot strike etc., but I’d still want a specialist to assess the information, rather than a sales assistant who’s been shown how to operate the machine.

But you could try footwear designed for your pronation/supination rather than just a pair off the shelf, and see if that makes any difference first.

Im sure quite a few of us go over on an ankle occasionally, but don’t need physical correction.

Do you think you’ve managed fine for years without, or do you think you’ve always suffered?
It's just a matter of time...

I think my gait has probably always been this way, but I've noticed it more as I've started walking further and more often in recent years.

I can go partially over on an ankle - enough for it to hurt for five or ten minutes - sometimes just stepping on a twig or stone.

I also have the bad habit of standing with one foot turned outward, taking weight on the outside edge, which I realise I've done unconsciously for ages.

This is how my shoes are wearing - these are Berghaus, so not the worst quality, and bought last summer. I've done a good few miles in them, but it's pretty obvious they're not wearing normally.

I’d suggest seeing a podiatrist and a physio. I’ve found ‘Superfeet’ footbeds are great, but the physio might be able to address muscular imbalance and offer some strengthening exercises which will be better longer term to reduce the risk of injury and aid your enjoyment. Also; and I cannot recommend this highly enough, try and find a Stott trained Pilates Instructor who specialises in Reformer Pilates and get some Foot-Work reformer sessions.

That wear pattern is very unusual, definitely worth seeing a podiatrist and finding out what’s going on with your feet, something isn’t right. Trying to self- diagnose these things is a mistake.

I really recommend, as so many others have suggested above, seeing a specialist. Self-diagnosis of something that can have such major impacts on the rest of your muscles and joints, is worth having verified.

I had orthotics custom made by a podiatrist 15 years ago. Expensive but I still haven't had to replace them despite using them every day!

    Thanks everyone.

Guess I'll look into getting some specialist advice.

On the Superfeet footbeds point, couldn't they make the OP's issue worse if he's already resting on the 'outer' edges of the feet, given they're designed to give more arch support?

I too went for Superfeet Oranges and Merino simply because I thought I needed arch support - they are incredibly comfortable and transformed many of my shoes into actually nice places to be! However, gait analysis revealed that I didn't need them as I don't require arch support. This was only done by 'Runners Need' so not a true specialist, but I'll be getting a more formal check-up conducted.

Ankle strengthening exercises probably a good idea, such as standing on one foot, up 'on point', hopping, and skipping.

I met this guy a few years ago at a Biomechanics conference in Dublin.

Samuel Welter – Orthopaedic Shoemaker Master

    https://pedorthist.ie/

He assessed several of us at the conference with load plates & foot mouldings to determine where the problems could arise.

He's slightly eccentric, but knows his stuff & is passionate about what he does.

Not cheap though - around 300 Euro IIRC.

This is why the OP should see a Podiatrist, but if I recall correctly the Purple Superfeet were mouldable with heat and therefore customisable to any gait, but I could be wrong and happy to stand corrected (no pun intended)!

Ah, that is entirely possible - I just kept seeing only arch support footbeds from them. I'll investigate the Purples then, as they could well work well for me.

Renewed thanks for the views and tips.

I've located a local orthotist who's still seeing patients, and will be booking a gait analysis / biomechanical assessment, and taking it from there.

Naturally, the shoes will be on Sales Corner shortly.

    Thanks again.
