Honda Foreman 500. Absolutely bullet proof and for land use only. Lovingly not looked after very well but used a LOT.

Am I alone in finding the self-contradictory “quad bike” painfully jarring?

I believe the correct term is “quadricycle”. 😀

    You're definitely alone there!

Maybe you need to look at the pic harder...

As they say in the good-ole-USA............. 4 wheeler.

Used as intended - very good tool, as a play thing, potentially lethal.
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........

Yep - same on the borders - if you have one you are either a farmer or on the rob!

Road lots herding cattle on our farm in Oz.

All good - but I wouldn’t want to be on one on steep inclines, and a lot of the farms were moving over to side-by-sides, and a couple of years ago the Australian government were providing a small grant. You couldn’t have full road legislation over there though, but you could get restricted registration to ride between your own properties as long as they were within a certain distance.

It's just a matter of time...

Was a bit tongue in cheek. The pic shows a quad and a bike but for clarity nobody calls it a quadricycle and if it troubles you you really need to get out more (not you kinsgstepper, just in general).

The DVLA call them quadricycles, for the record.

I thought my post was tongue in cheek to tell the truth, because I don’t think I’ve ever seen the word outside the small print on a driving licence.

I think this constitutes a mutual “whoosh”.

    Mutual whoosh agreed.
As an aside what makes it a cycle or bike at all? Is it because it has handle bars and not a steering wheel? 4 wheels and an engine is normally a car!

Now the quads they raced in last weeks Dakar were the full fat models. If you watched any of the Red Bull coverage, the riders had to be so physical with them, arguably more so than on the bikes which just seemed to float. The quad riders looked like they were “ wrestling with a steer”

    Shouldn’t they be called motorquadribikes?

I had the use of a mate's Honda Big Red for a few months as I had to transport timber from half a dozen very large fallen trees. They were 100 metres from my house as the crow flies, but due to a stream and my pond being in the way - the timber had to be transported about 2 kms across fields and along a road. It had a tow hook and I used a small trailer.

It did a brilliant job, but it never felt safe on either mud or tarmac. So whilst I can understand why farmers and small holders use them, god knows why you'd want one for pleasure use as an off road bike is far better and much safer. But each to their own I guess.
