50- 60k was a bit of a shock to the owner
Lovely story, but tatty watch.
I would have thought the money was in the provenance and the dial which was not that bad, it was also a pointed crown guard version. (I don’t even like the watch but I have learnt a load from being here)
What a fantastic thing to have. Wonder if he will sell? The value is tempting but.....
I bought my GMT from money left me by my parents 20 year ago and I don't think I will sell it, for sentimental reasons.
They always claim they had no idea of the value but I don’t believe that for a minute. They wouldn’t even think about bringing a ‘tatty old watch’ onto the Antiques Roadshow unless they had more than an inkling that it had serious value.
I’m sure the producers instruct them to play dumb too.

It was a cracker.
It looked like a Breitling Top Time Chronograph the expert was wearing. It looked bigger than the original 35mm vintage model, so possibly one of these?
Just watched this, a very nice piece and a lovely heirloom, but that crown looks as though it was fitted yesterday.

Didn't see it live but just watched it on Iplayer. I enjoyed it and it looked a pretty genuine reaction to me. I imagine there would have been some idea of value for probate but that could have been way out.

Agree, the guys reaction was definitely genuine. Yes he no doubt thought it was worth at least a few thousand, but he wasn't expecting that at all.
The Rolex is from 51:57 on iPlayer..

Having been around reality antique programmes and even appeared in a couple I can tell you that "reality" shows are usually quite carefully scripted.

I thought watches are classed as depreciating assets, so don’t count for probate
I am no expert but have dealt with probate a few times, watches were always included and the solicitor insisted on valuations. It seems it would be a huge loophole if they were not. I thought depreciating assets, was around CGT, depreciation for probate was if you value them at X but they sell for less than that, within 12 months, then you can go back and get the IhT recalculated.
I'd love them to do a watch and clock special, with perhaps a follow up of whether those with some favourable valuations did put them up for auction. Of the most recent ones I remember, the Speedy Ultraman bought by a merchant sailor in Hong Kong in 1968 was my favourite, with a £40K valuation IIRC.
EDIT: A quick Google shows he sold it for £31K. Good on him.
