Didn’t Sheridan Smith pull out at the last minute and he had to muddle through?
Just in case you missed him last night on Strictly….
He was appalling.

My other half is a fan of his and went to see him in concert recently. The verdict was 'very disappointing', he sang a few old Take That songs on his own, a number of Xmas tunes including this and all were similar and nowhere near as good as the originals. Talented writer, decent singer but this isn't his thing at all.
The nice thing about that performance, for me, was that it showed what an amazing songwriter McCartney was. Even that one, which in the context of Macca's entire canon could be considered something of a throwaway, really comes alive with a big band arrangement - albeit the arranger reharmonised it here and there with some jazzier chords.
Gary is a decent popular songwriter with a half-decent voice. I don't think he has the charisma or personality to carry off a solo vocal performance like that, especially with all those shapes he was throwing. He's not Sammy Davis Jr. I have to agree, it was painful.
He is, or was a Judge on X Factor.
Bet if he was a nobody, he wouldn’t even get an audition singing and daddy dancing like that.
If you heard Chris Martin in that Radio2 Cold Play concert last week it was equally appalling.
So out of tune it was embarrassing.
When you look back at Take That, Gary was 96% of the talent. He wrote, performed, played and sang most of their hits (cover versions aside) but the cuter members were more popular with their fan base. He’s had a couple of attempts at a solo career now but his main problem seems to be lack of charisma. Whenever I see him interviewed it feels like he’s some sort of illegitimate love child of Tom Cruise and Peter Kay. With the charisma of neither of them

What the AF did I just watch!
EDIT: And I say that as an aging TT fan. Agree with comments that it’s not the singing, it’s the arrangement that’s all wrong esp. the shaky dancing. Just very odd

I think people are overreacting, it wasn’t that bad.
Whereas Jamie Cullum opening the show was excellent in our opinion

Nothing wrong with that performance . They’ve done a swing version that’s all , he’s in time and he’s in tune , he just happens not to be screaming it out through some warbling autotune with a bunch of backing singers . That seems to pass for a quality performance for the masses these days .
I’m not a fan but I see nothing particularly bad about that performance and its refreshing that he’s doing something a little bit different and singing it live without any vocal viagra.
I think you'd have to be a die hard GB fan to think that performance was OK - it was embarrassing.
He has no charisma at all, weak voice, Dad dancing - Gordon Bennett!
Is that what passes as entertainment nowadays?
Bruce Forsyth (RIP) would have done a better job.
Cheers,
Neil.
That was a terrible arrangement. I don’t really know who at the BBC thought it a good idea. I doubt any good swing or jazz singer would have pulled it off
I thought it was a good performance too. Maybe not what people expect from that song, but for a dance tune it worked well. He tried something new and it worked IMHO.
There is Gary Barlow Wine now, these people will do anything for money
I’m not a Barlow fan but I suspect the arrangement (which was appalling) was mostly to blame.
Not with that arrangement.
And anyway,Brucey wasn’t exactly what you would call a great singer unless you like the cheesy variety style of singing.
Indeed.
I'm not sure why people are surprised...

Breitling Cosmonaute 809 - What's not to like?
He’s a shadow of his former self, and as alluded to earlier by someone he was clearly the talent in the band, but not the eye candy or personality.
After Take that, going solo, take that reforming and another crack at solo now, this is his 4th bite at the cherry, he’s clearly addicted to it. It’s like the footballer who’s legs have gone playing on in the 4th division…. People will talk about his pomp and pay for a ticket to see “one last time”
Some people like the fame, for some people it’s the fortune…. Clearly for GB it’s the former.
