    USB Laptop microphone - recommendations

    Hi All,

My student life working from home involves a lot of zoom calls and team meetings. Recently, this week, I've been introduced to the joys of preparing a Panopto presentation . I have managed to do it with the inbuilt mic on the laptop but you can hear my mouse scraping the desk as I move it to highlight points of reference on the slides. Is their anyone else having this bother and can a cheap (student budget) mic set-up be recommended? Typically doing my shopping online due to lockdown.

    Thanks in advance.

I use a Logitech USB2 HD 780p cam with built in mic for Zoom calls - works great both on Windows and Mac.

But there seem lots of mic only options too - maybe a headset might be the best option to avoid room noise?

Do you have any bluetooth headphones with a mike? That would do it.

I'd recommend a Plantronics headset - perhaps from the Savi range. I once had to arrange some recordings at short notice for some call centre greetings and used a £50 microphone from Maplins that worked very well - something a bit like this:

You should also pay attention to the acoustic properties of the room you are in.
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

    Hi Alan,

No sir no such joy, but I’m defo open to that option. Only thing is I’ve a Panopto video to prepare for next week, I’ve PhD initial assessment and not sure wearing the headphones would be well received. Still need to figure out how to put my video in bottom right hand corner of the presentation.

I’m definitely missing out not being on campus.

    Cheers

    This one...https://www.gear4music.com/Recording...IaAlb8EALw_wcB

The Neat Bumblebee - I bought it for exactly the reasons you’ve highlighted and have had nothing but good reports from people I’ve spoken to online. USB, plug and play, headphone socket built in (I use the left ear only of a pair of in-earphones). It also allows for adjustment of mic gain, headphones volume and type of sound input (speech, music, etc.).

I thoroughly recommend it (and do to everyone who asks the question).

I speak regularly to someone at work who says “it always sounds like you are using professional recording equipment”.

    Hope that helps.
