First Annual Friday Watch Awards Ceremony

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the first Annual TZ-UKFWT awards ceremony. Sadly due to the current pandemic this is a virtual event and not a gala dinner in the glamourous surroundings of the Dorchester's Ballroom (the dream) or even the Conference Suite at the Watford Holiday Inn Express (the reality). The lack of live event is probably a blessing in disguise as there is less chance of the MCR-GTG crew performing a Chumbawumba style protest on one of the more respectable members of the forum.

By now you should have received the gift bag from our corporate sponsors Sales Corner. Rivalling the best swag bags of the awards industry, within it you will find: a pair of used sandals, a limited edition bottle of Dalek bubble Bath, a complimentary bag of popcorn to enjoy the entertainment with and an opened bottle of fragrance randomly selected by Eddie himself. The piece de resistance is, of course, a forum only edition watch produced by Bremont. A stunning timepiece that I am sure will depreciate so much over the next few years you'll be glad it was a freebie. At the bottom of the bag you will find a small envelope in which you can, if you have enjoyed this evening's entertainment, leave a small donation for the fundraiser to give it a good start for the New Year. Alternatively you could use the link at the top of the webpage.

The events team have worked hard on making this an evening to remember. A lot of effort was put in to booking a guest speaker who we were sure the whole forum would warmly welcome and whose stories we would greatly appreciate. Sadly, due to his upcoming investiture, Lewis Hamilton has had to cancel at short notice, no doubt consulting his tailor as to suitable attire for the occasion. However we are in huge debt to perhaps the most famous star of the Dear Wife thread (I shall not name her here to save her blushes) has stepped in at the last minute to regale us with tales of what living with one of the forum stalwarts is really like.

No expense has been spent on entertainment during the interval either. Our very own troupe of court jesters, The Bear Pit Regulars, will be entertaining us with their unique combination of poetry, song and modern dance. They will be performing new pieces such as "An Ode to the Draft Thread" and a very special mimed version of "Play the man not the ball". I am sure, for their finale, they will join hands and perform their internationally renowned acapella version of Micheal Jackson's Heal The World. I can't wait. No, I really can't.

Anyway, the entertainment is second to the real reason why we are here. Watches. Shorty we will reveal the winners of such highly anticipated awards as Most Watches in the Year and The Night Owl/Early Bird award. But before all of that let us run through a few numbers first.

The 52 Fridays of 2020 saw us post a grand total of 8,398 watches, that is a weekly average of 161.5 watches. The highest number of watches in one week was on the 13th of November when 189 watches were posted, the lowest was 105 watches on the 3rd of January.

The highest count in a single month was October which saw a total of 836 watches. As October was a five week month this was half to be expected. The highest four week month was November which had 639 watches. Looking at the weekly average of each month goes some way to negating the the differences. The month with the highest weekly average was November which had a weekly average of 174.25.

Overall we had 382 different brands so we just fell short of the the 400 which looked possible earlier on in the year. Something to aim for next year. The highest number of brands in a month was May with 142 separate brands worn, unsurprisingly May also had the second highest number of new brands with 43 new to the year, second only to the 49 in February which was when the year was just getting going.

We did manage to post a brand representing every letter of the alphabet, with Xeric and Q+Q providing the hard to get letters.

So which brands scored the big numbers? If you have been following the monthly threads the results will not come as much of a surprise but here goes. Sadly I have no glamourous celebrity who will open the gold-like envelopes or to present the plated base metal statuettes.

The most watches from one brand shown in a week goes to - Seiko with 37 worn back on the 24th of April.

The most watches from one brand shown in a month goes to - Rolex with 130 examples worn way back in the innocent days of January.

The most watches worn through out the year - yes Rolex again with a total of 1,259 posted last year. In second place comes Seiko with 1,075. Omega trails in in third place with 795. Timefactors comes in fourth palce with a respectable 418 ahead of Tudor with 323.

The next award is a bit of a different one. The Night Owl/Early Bird awards goes to the brand which started the most number of Friday threads. This year it is shared between two brands. Rolex and Panerai who both started the Friday threads on twelve occasions, accounting for almost half the year between them.

The final, and arguably the most prestigious, award is the Watch Counter's Watch of the Year. This is a totally biased award given to my favourite watch of the year. It is a difficult job to chose from so many. There have been a couple of Polerouters which I do have a soft spot for. I also enjoy watches which are different. The Panarai Equation of Time and the Helvetia Depthomatic are ones that spring to mind. However this years winner is paw3001's JLC Master Control with Sector Dial. I need say no more than it is a truly stunning watch.

Now, if paw3001 could show his gratitude for winning such a prestigious award by boxing up the aforementioned watch and sending it to me then we can call the deal closed.

    Anyway, now for the entertainment.......

A huge thank you from me.

Always interesting to see how the numbers stack up - and again loads of brands I haven’t come across, or ones that spark a memory :)
It's just a matter of time...

Superb work mate, and masterfully delivered.

I think we need to see paw3001's “JLC Master Control with Sector Dial” again!

First Annual Friday Watch Awards Ceremony

Gosh! What can I say? I am honoured and I had no idea. I haven’t even prepared a speech!

Firstly, I would like to thank God for creating such fine watchmakers and brands that grace these pages. Secondly, I would like to thank the Panel Jury for all their hard work counting and collating the numbers. They really deserve an award all for themselves. Thirdly, I could not have achieved such heady heights without the help of Dandandanman who kindly sold me the watch many moons ago from the magical Sales Corner. Thank you.

Also, of course, I need to thank my family for going without holidays and other essentials to support my watch collection/addiction, without them I could have bought many more fabulous watches. A special mention must go to my wife, who through her disinterest and tuts has no idea of the breadth or value of my small collection of trinkets. My children, who are so dear to me, are happy to forego the opportunity to attend University and I look forward to passing down my collection to them unless I flip it first!

I have to regret that I will be unable to package up the award winning watch as being based here in Berlin as a Brexit refugee I unable to find a carrier willing to take it to the United Plague Island and I would hate for our gracious Award host to be charged the horrors of VAT!

Therefore, I will now print out this thread and add it to the paperwork of my now award winning JLC Master Control Sector Dial with Date which will now be leaping in value above such lowly competition such as Rolex Sports or those tacky Pateks or Audemars.

Thank you, thank you, I love you all...

    Fine watch, too.

Interesting, thank you for your efforts. For me, interesting that there were more Patek than either Oris, Steinhart or Casio.

Brilliant work as always and really entertaining post.

CWC did really well, hey and I must have single handedly got Alexander Shorokhoff into number 75 above the likes of RADO and leveling with Cartier.

Some surprising names down near the bottom that I would have expected to be much higher, always an interesting perspective.

Thanks OP for continuing on with this, was so happy to see it revived after AnimalOne(I think it was) become to bogged down to keep it going.

Thanks for dedicating time to this, looking at the breadth and variety of watches on show is one of the weekly highlights.

Excellent write-up! Wonder what's the correlation between Rolex/Panerai and night owls/early posters !?

What a great post Wimm, very enjoyable to read this morning. I’m delighted to see an honourable mention for the Depthomatic, which I am wearing today. Any JLC would be a worthy winner, especially that one.

An appropriate FR contribution is on its way.

Quite pleased to see that 4 (maybe 5) of the 'one-hit wonders' were mine.

Great work on analysing what people are posting.

A great read and I also find the data interesting. This of course a community of enthusiasts so I guess this data can not be used to gauge the general market, but it's still clear that big brands are big also here - top 5 brands account for nearly 50% of total.

I am glad that you all enjoyed the summary of last year's watches, it was fun putting it together.

Many thanks to paw3001 for the photos and for keeping his acceptance speech short and sweet and without too many tears. And a grudging thank you Unclealec for spotting my mistake. Next year I may ask him to proof read it.

Anyway slightly delayed but as promised, for those who like statistics, here are the charts.

Firstly one showing the monthly totals, from which little real insight can be gained because of the variation of numbers of Friday's in each month, compared with the weekly average for the year and the weekly average for each month.

    on Flickr

The weekly average for each month does show us something interesting. A 12% increase from March to April. Perhaps more of us had extra time on our hands to post watches on Fridays. Thee increase continued until July and August when the weekly average fell and then an increase until it drops off suddenly in December. I put this down to Christmas day falling on a Friday and less watches posted.

Next up is the monthly weekly averages compared with numbers of brands shown in each month.

    on Flickr

This shows a large increase in the number of brands shown from April to May. Whether this is lock down boredom giving the excuse to dig out less worn pieces or perhaps May was when the new lockdown arrivals started to filter in.

    on Flickr

Above we have a chart showing the monthly totals of the top ten brands for each month and next, a chart of the weekly average each month of the top ten brands which shows us a little more detail on th trends of each brand over time.

    on Flickr

That rounds off last year's results, I'd better get on with this year's for which I am planning to make a few changes. If there is anything you would like to see then ask and I'll consider it (except for breaking it down into models, far too much work).

    Thank you for reading.

Most of those were accrued in January (11 to be exact) back in the days when my ID skills weren't so good and I hadn't thought to contact the owners to ask what they were. Nowadays I do but sometimes response there is none. Unfortunately I have know way in telling which early ones were UI. More often than not it is an image that has vanished which results in being recorded as unidentifiable.
