Wood burner “explosion” what is this?

Last night we had what I can only describe as a mini explosion in the wood burner.

We only ever burn wood and this has never happened before. There was a bang and a puff of air that rattled the doors.

I let it burn down and today have had a look everything looks ok but I have found the below in the ash.

    Anyone know what it is?

I had assumed it was a pocket of sap that had caused it but I don’t know what this item is and where it came from.

I’m pretty sure it is not part of the wood burner

It has two numbers stamped on it 39001 and 489. Google yields nothing.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Do the oval holes go all the way around? It looks like a nozzle of some sort.

    Yep, top spot.

I had not thought anyone could be so stupid as to burn their own lighter, I was trying to think of something that had come in with the logs.

Yes, hence the mini explosion. Held out against the flames for quite some time. It’s basically a cigarette lighter with a nozzle.

Wood burner is on again now and has been for hours, this time lit with matches.

I remember a fireplace being shattered when a blasting cap (a detonator from the mine) ignited after being thrown on the fire in the "nutty slack" build up before bedtime (to keep the fire lit overnight back in the olden days of my youth!). Luckily everyone had climbed the stairs to Bedfordshire but the room was well alight very quickly! All is well that ends well!

Ah I see, then you were very lucky indeed! Could have produced some unhealthy shrapnel so a good result given the possibilities.

Apart from the nozzle the whole thing was plastic so I guess it just melted and the bang was the fuel releasing.
