Thread: Idea for a small watch box

Idea for a small watch box

I was looking for a box for a couple of chronographs.

I went for a vintage music box off EBay, £20.

I reckon very late 1940s or 1950s. I think they were made to hold cigarettes or bits and bobs, maybe cuff links, collar stiffeners, tie pins that sort of thing. There’s no cigarette smell.

I’ve given it a quick clean and I think the wood looks rather nice. There is a mark on the underside of the lid which I can live with. The real bonus is it plays the zither music from the theme of The Third Man’ which was not stated in the EBay posting. It uses a Swiss Thorens wind up mechanism.

Very pleased with it and these things can go for very little on EBay.

Very nice. Sets off those special watches very well.

I keep the key for my Smiths mantle clock in a cigarette case made by an SAAF airman stationed in Italy during WW2. Not the same workmanship as your box but a nice thing to open once a week.

That looks quite good- you should try to get some self-adhesive felt to line the box. This is the stuff that I use:

    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

I think those everyday kinds of possessions are very appealing, perhaps crudely made (I can’t think of a better word). I have my grandad’s cigarette case and corkscrew, I think from WW1 but can’t be sure. Very basic, no intrinsic value, but very precious.

Mmmmm, that could look pretty good. Also have a vintage wooden pocket chess set that would look good with the felt lining on the insides of the folding box.

Very nice box and a great re-purpose for it. The box looks like Tiger Maple the lid I can't tell but great idea!

Thanks, I’m interested in knowing what the woods are. I know nowt about these things but had it in my mind that the darker would might be rose wood or walnut and lighter box wood or maple.

In case you missed it, this was a little job I did over the holidays.

A quality job, the way you have created the compartments and laid the felt look perfect.

alfat33 mentioned his trench art case for his clock key.

This is my main watch box. Oak trench art box, created by a soldier of the Royal Naval Brigade, interned in The Netherlands, I guess after the fall of Antwerp in 1914.

It has a lock and key. The handle for the lower drawer is part of a 1908 farthing. There is some relatively minor damage around the lid and one hinge. It would be nice to get it perfectly fixed, a bit beyond me, but in the meantime just a minor defect and very usable case.

And on the theme, a matchbox cover, Groningen 1915.

A couple of old wooden boxes that I adapted for watches. Most of them are vintage or vintage inspired which seems to be in keeping with the boxes.

They’re great. Nice to see wood and well made stuff reused.

Did you have to do much? Repair, clean, add cushions?

This is a great idea. I was looking for a box or roll to store my modest collection but wasn't impressed with what you can buy so might go for something like this instead.

The 2 watch mahogany box I just glued some felt on the inside and put two watch cushions in, so very simple really. The coromandel box I had some timber which I cut and rounded off before covering with some ex army surplus canvas. Which originally had been made for one of the two boxes I made about 10 years ago when the owner of the 7 military issued Precistas, sadly all long gone.
