If you look at a point away from them they both rotate in the same direction!!
Inspired by a post elsewhere, I rather think that optical illusions are worth a thread of their own. I'll kick it off with this.
Look at the red dot in the animated GIF below and identify which way the outer circles are rotating around it. Now do the same for the yellow dot. Both times anticlockwise, right?
Now look at the red dot and with your peripheral vision see which way the outer dots are rotating around the yellow dot.
There's a research paper on the effect, here: https://digital.lib.washington.edu/r...250E_12882.pdf

Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
This is my favourite one. It's very difficult, isn't it, to accept that the A and B squares are the same colour?
It is very good. I use a paper form of it in a training course to demonstrate visual perception, handing out an overlay with cutouts in after the students have decided that the two squares cannot possibly be the same shade.

Well I'm not an expert in visual perception and all that, but - I think that in simple terms it's pretty much as simple as this - your brain compensates for the shade it perceives as compromising its perception of the B square, so in the mental map of the scene that it creates, it renders the B square as lighter.
Here's a fun one that someone shared on Facebook a few years ago. Two concentric circles that don't touch each other, but you may have to trace them carefully with a mouse pointer to see it.
How many different colours of balls are there?
Amazingly, they're all the same.

Great thread my friend and Happy New Year.
Well I just can’t see any of them, completely done. Brains will be up shortly so will let Henry have a go.

Can’t get same colour ball.

The coloured ball illusion, for me, was pretty much impossible to work out when viewing on my mobile however on my much larger laptop screen it becomes more obvious.
Coincidentally this video popped up on my FB feed this morning -
Arrr I have it thanks.

There are some really interesting illusions linked from this article
https://newatlas.com/science/best-op...ntest-winners/
The web site itself has some good articles too if you are interested in engineering, science, bikes, mini campers ..
A lot of the illusions on this page show exactly the sorts of problems that artists have to overcome when they are painting :-
Another example is this one, try sampling the centre cubes on the top side and the one facing you, what appear to be the brown and yellow ones. The result is surprising....
A while back on social media a girl posted a pic of this dress
Which caused a stir. 70% said it was gold and white and 30% said black and navy. Interestingly if you see one you cannot see the other but scientists produced this to demonstrate why you might see both. The type of light shining on it affects perception of the base colour / similar to the Rubik cube one above
Even presented with it like this it’s hard to accept they are the same colours.
So basically it could be a yellow light shining on a black and navy dress, or a blue light shining on a gold and white one. Great thread btw
Yep

That one is really messing with my head! Brilliant.
I don't get it, the one that starts in the middle and stays where it is, is always the different one, isn't it?
Thread bump.
This one's subtle, though once you see it.... Not an illusion as such though there's something there that's not immediately obvious.
Edit to add that those looking at the picture on a mobile may have an advantage.

We recently visited the Quirky Quarter in Liverpool. Its a gallery that is full of optical illusions etc. Great way to spend an hour in the amazing city of Liverpool.

Just a couple of the images. There is a hall of mirrors which is amazing.

The low res of this doesn't help.

The Thatcher Effect is a good one.
Recognise the face? Just looks like an upside down image of Adele. Turn the image upside down.
This thread is great fun.

Stare at the image below for around 15 seconds and you might see a giraffe appear.
