Every year as it starts to get colder I always wear a short sleeve thermal type vest/short sleeve T shirt, the ones I have bought all work ok for warmth but they tend to be too short in the length especially after my wife has shrunk them a little they always seem to lift up and be above the top of my jeans/trousers after wearing for a short time, drives me mad.
Any recommendations for longer quality ones ?

And don’t wash them on a normal
Cycle or tumble dry them!
Dhb merino at Wiggle is good quality ime. Wash using a merino specific detergent on a wool wash and it'll last ages.
Merino is far and away the best but for ease of care cost etc helly Hansen lifa stuff comes a close second for me
Thanks but that could be a deal breaker for me, I think the the one in charge uses the same cycle for everything and during the winter most things end up in a tumble dryer, could be why mine tend to be short/shrunk.Originally Posted by daveyw
Decent merino, icebreaker etc is fine to wash at 40 and tumble. You also don’t need to use wool detergent with merino, normal is better.

I have a selection of Ortovox merino tops, excellent quality, wash well but on the pricey side. Tried Icebreaker previous which aren’t cheap either but was disappointed with the overall quality of their thinner tops

Whilst there is loads of "specialised" clobber out there, don't discount good old M&S! have an excellent long sleeve thermal top, walking in 0 degrees C just that and a Rohan Fleece top and perfectly warm, can also be chucked in washing machine with "lesser" clothing with no ill effects. cheers, John B4
Whilst merino gets very highly recommended I can't get on with the material so I go synthetic.

2nd M+S, have a couple vests and they are for sure good quality and withstand frequent washing
Heat tech uniqlo if you want cheaper (I can't stand the material on my skin otherwise I'd use them), otherwise Icebreaker look for 200+ weighting for the thermals.
Uniqlo seem to get a good write up but if you want Merino, I'm been wearing Keela Merino thermal tops the last month and have no complaints.

I swear by this. Bought some while in Japan as an under shirt to avoid sweat marks on shirts. But great not only in hot conditions but cold too

Seconded. The quality is good and they wear very comfortably. I use a normal wash at 30C (occasionally 40C) and have had no problems with shrinkage. I find the length fine too. For a daily base-layer I'd go with the 150g. You'll probably need to order 2 sizes larger than you'd think though as their sizing is notoriously on the small side.
I’ll add my vote to Uniqlo HeatTech. I have 2 at the moment and another 3 on the way.

I haven't shrunk mine yet after countless 30 degree washes and tumble drying.
If you can bear the daily emails Sport Pursuit have them on constant sale. Mine are ISOBAA. Buy merino and not merino blend.
My wife bought some ISobaa jumpers and they look great. I have a load of Howies that I stocked up on, from an amazing sale had a year or two ago.
I really don’t understand why anyone would buy Icebreakers anymore. I appreciate they were pioneers in pushing merino but as this thread shows there are so many options now
I use icebreaker 360gsm merino long sleeve and they are warm.
Also will third the M nS cotton and fluffy inner lining £15 to £20 IIRC

I got caught in the hype that my friend inflicted on me a few years back
Everything has got holes in places I've never had holes before. Armpits and crotch. I bought two long John's, a t shirt and a long sleeve t shirt. All in it was around £250
I expected much better
I think Merino wool is over hyped. For me I’d buy Helly Hanson. I’ve worn this for years skiing, sailing and running and it is for me the best you can buy, but M & S used to sell some nice stretchy base layer stuff too.
I've got three merino wool t shirts from Supernatural and really impressed with them.
I tend to buy them a size down and use them as a short sleeved base layer under a sweatshirt/jumper.
Best thing is how breathable they are and can genuinely wear them for 3-4 days assuming I've not done any sweaty exercise.
Various retailers sell them but Sportpursuit often do deals.

Bought 3 Icebreaker base layers together a couple years ago and they too ended up riddled with holes quickly. Had to send one back after the 1st week, would not buy them again, however I have an Icebreaker long sleeve half zip and thats been excellent, even after 3 years it still looks good
Don’t agree, Merino isn’t over hyped, it’s probably the best but it doesn’t suit everyone. I prefer synthetic as it doesn’t irate my skin so much
There’s lots of pros and cons on both sides of the merino and synthetic camps. All my merino is icebreaker, I’ve had it about 7 years and usually wear them for a week then throw them in the washer with everything else and tumble them and have never had a problem. I wore 1 T-shirt on a 14 bike trip and it didn’t stink. Synthetic stuff is Arc’teryx phasers that’s great but is a pain to wash but it’s long and really warm.

I’ve used M&S thermals for years on the bike and they’re hard to beat in their price range.
Another one for M&S. I have a long sleeve ice breaker with the matching long John's but they're thick and I couldn't wear them all day, just in the winter on the motorbike. M&S miles easier and worked for me as I could just put a shirt on over it when I got to work.
I ordered one of the above after the recommendations in this thread, not a lot of choice due too most of what I wanted being out of stock.
Really surprised how thin it is compared to my existing ones and a nice length, I will see how it wears, thanks.

Another vote for uniqlo. Peter millar also has some nice base layers
my isobaa tops are really warm and get used and abused. Usially end up going i the washer at 40 with everything else. try to avoid tumble dryer. they fit well, importantly, they don't itch. the zip neck tops look good too
Janus are better in my opinion (more comfortable and warmer, but hard to find). both come up on sport pursuit on offer from time to time. Try and avoid synthetic meterial as they tend to get smelly and often this is not always got rid of with a wash - i find they tend to make me sweaty too.
Had a Marks and spencer thermal t-shirt for 20 yrs now (same one). Despite having more expensive, merino tops, this M&S thermal top is as good if not better. Can be washed hot, tumbled dry and still no holes or signs of wear. It has seen me through skiing trips and walking holidays and around the house when feeling a chill (under a shirt). def worth looking into if they are still this good
Final update, having washed the Uniqlo a couple of times and wore it I am very pleased with it the material feels good against the skin, good length, perhaps not as warm as I hoped but fine and two more arrived today on the back of my short trial.

I’ve bought more of the Uniqlo tops too. I have 3 ultra warms and 3 extra warms. The ultras are very toasty. They are nearly twice the weight of the extras.
"Never cast a clout until May is out" every year apart from last year I tend to follow this advice and with this weekend being the start of a heatwave and the end of May it seems the perfect time to put these away until winter (September).
I bought three UNIQLO HEATTECH JERSEY CREW NECK SHORT SLEEVED THERMAL T-SHIRT and have worn them in rotation continually since buying them so each one has been washed at least twice a week and they have performed perfectly, kept there shape and feel as good now as the first time I wore them, nice stuff really impressed.
I bought a few Uniqlo heat tech t shirts when they were on sale around February to try them out. When they arrived I was a bit sceptical as the material was a little 'different', however for general duties around the home they have performed well and so far kept their shape. I still use my Keela merino wool thermal tops for active use, (which I like and I know will perform and last) but I will get a few more Uniqlo heat tech tops this winter and see how well they perform in an active role.
Uniqlo gear for me. As well as their inner wear, their thermal outer tracksuit bottoms are toastie.
