About 6 years ago I decided I really wanted a A Lange & Sohne 1815 chronograph. I was undecided about whether to go for the original version, made between around 2004 and 2008 or the current version. In the end, I went with what I could get at the time (the current version in rose gold. I don't know whether it was the rose gold, or the relatively plain dial, but lovely as it was, I decided to let it go. For about 5 years now, I've been hankering after the earlier version in white gold, the 401.026.
They're pretty few and far between, with most turning up in the US or far east seemingly. I knew a member on here owned one and pestered him about every 6 months for 4 years. I'm not sure if that's the reason, but he hasn't posted on here for over a year now! Anyway, long story short, one came up at a UK dealer with a recent service at Lange in pristine condition, so I finally committed. It only took half a decade.
No matter what you think of the dial aesthetic...and it won't be for everyone...I don't know where you'd find a better looking or finished movement at any price. This isn't a cheap watch, but the movement finishing puts many costing twice as much, to shame. A couple of pictured to follow. For me, I'm not sure how I can ever better this.
I now have this one and the Up/Down and am trying to justify keeping both. We'll see.

I would die a happy man with that on my wrist.

That looks stunning. Congrats :-)
Stunning piece. Congratulations!

Perfection. Congrats.
Superb, dream watch
Magnificent. Congratulations.
Mmmmmmmmm
Tis the stuff dreams are made off.
Very close to perfection. What a lovely watch. Enjoy!
I’d be curious to see what sort of clothing you wear with it, and how it looks. Can you wear it with casual clothes? I love how some fancy PP can be dressed up or down, but not sure about this Lange. It looks very serious to me.

As you know John I love that! A movement that visually is superior to anything at the price point (and a few runs up too).
I also love the dial. I think bought your old rose one and agree the dial is more special on this version, so much so that the latest version is similar (in a lot more going on) so I guess Lange agree too.
Enjoy!
Love it!
What a stunning watch and beautiful movement, congratulations.
Just superb. It makes me wish that I had been born rich instead of good-looking!
The pulsation dial is super cool as well.. what a stunning watch
Yes perfection is the only word.
Congratulations on finding it after such a long search
Absolutely gorgeous, congratulations. Well worth the wait.
I have been biding my own time for another ALS purchase, patience will hopefully be rewarded.

The movement is incredible, I would be tempted to wear that with the dial facing my wrist and a fitbit on the other wrist.

Quite possibly a 'end game' watch.
Definately in my all time money no object collection.
Many thanks for all the positive comments. To answer one or two queries/thoughts:
I think it's a watch you can wear quite easily with casual clothes. I wouldn't describe it as a delicate watch. I'd say that's even more possible if you change the strap. I've seen these on vintage style brown straps and it totally changes the look.
Yes two 1815's is probably a bit excessive, but we'll see what happens!
Totally agree that this is one to be part of an end game collection. I don't anticipate selling it. Unfortunately most of what I've got now seems to be part of an end game collection, which would be fine if I only had three watches rather than 20+. It's got a bit out of hand value-wise, but it's nice to have things you can see, feel touch and wear rather than another piece of paper with numbers on it.
That is absolutely killer, such a gorgeous watch!
[QUOTE=893bet;5626670]Hi john,
I recently moved my 1815 onto tan leather. I think it gives it a fairly casual look.
What else is in your collection at the moment?
Yes they can look good on brown straps. Seen them on vintage straps with the large stitch (don't know the proper name) which also look good.
Aside from the two 1815's, most of the rest at the moment are vintage. So a 6263 Daytona, a couple of pre-moon Speedmasters including an Ed White, a 165.104 Seamaster from 1962, an original Ploprof, a Megaquartz, TV dial Speedmaster, Sub 5513, Enicar Shepagraph and a few other vintage. Modern, I have JLC Reverso Gransport, Black Bay 58, Planet Ocean, Panerai Submersible LE and one or two cheaper bits.
Simply... WOW.
Beautiful wear it with pride. Enjoy
A dream watch! One day, I also want a Lange Chronograph. Either this one or a Datograph.
Congratulations and enjoy!
Just took some photos with the Up/Down...

I'd be tempted to wear it back to front.
One day I will get one of these! So very nice.
Surely I can't be the only one who on reading acme thought of this..

Me too! Now it all makes sense.
From Wikipedia...
“The company name in the Road Runner cartoons is ironic,[1] since the word acme is derived from Greek (ακμή; English transliteration: akmē) meaning the peak, zenith or prime,[2] yet products from the fictional Acme Corporation are often generic, failure-prone, or explosive.”
Apologies for the sidetrack on what is one of my favourite watches of all time. Unfortunately handling and trying one on in Harrods will be the closest I’ll ever get to owning one. Watchmaking at its acme indeed.
Congrats OP! Beautiful, truly beautiful.
You can recognise the ALS DNA immediately from the more formal and robust “Germanic” design for the movement and dial.
Wear in good health!
