Charity raffle for my local hospital - Ebel Discovery, Hamtun Nanok, Traser Commander

    Dear fellows,

As some of you might know, I have had a nasty form of Covid recently. Spent two weeks in the local hospital, had a pretty complete package (thankfully avoided the ICU), lost about 15 kilos... Happy, very happy to be since a few weeks back home with family, and to slowly but steadily recover.

In the past 8 or 9 years, I have organised a number of raffles, all of them dedicated to Eddie's charities. A rather nice amount of money was gathered in each of them (there’s been a Breitling Aerospace, an Oris 65, and a few others). This time I'd like to organise a raffle dedicated to my local hospital (Spitalul Judetean Sibiu). The doctors there are doing an amazing job with limited resources, and, as the numbers are still exceedingly high over here, they asked for public support in getting additional funds for a modular 12 beds unit.

So here would be the rules of the raffle:

    • The winner will receive an Ebel Discovery Diver, bought new by me a couple of months ago and worn maybe one afternoon (this was from when I was still doing this kind of impulse buys... seems the Covid experience has cured me out of this as well). The list price lies as about 1450 pounds. Comes with box, papers, original steel bracelet AND original rubber strap. Here's the official link to the watch: https://www.ebel.com/us/en/shop-watc...y-1216427.html Here's a pic shamelessly stolen from the net:

    • Each entry ticket is of 10 pounds
    • The payment is to be done in the following gofundme account: https://www.gofundme.com/f/wooster-booster. It’s been kindly organised by Mr Curta (many, many thanks Matthew for agreeing with this). He'll collect all the payments and then make one single big donation with the money collected. Considering Matthew's stellar reputation on the forum, I suppose you'll all feel comfortable with this process.
    • The winner will be selected by my daughter, Thea, on Sunday, December 20, at 8PM GMT. She's 1 1/2 years old and practically incorruptible. I’ll send then the watch via DHL, so that it will reach the lucky winner before Christmas.
    • If the raffle will be going rather fine (i.e. we achieve at least 1k pounds), I'll add a few more pretty cool watches to the pool.

Thanks to Eddie for hosting us.

      Cheers,
      Christian

A quick word about Christian's GoFundMe page, which is here:

    https://www.gofundme.com/f/wooster-booster

Due to the complexities of tracking donations to an individual or directly to the hospital overseas, we are using the highly reputable and trusted Crowdfunding site GoFundMe to collect donations. Donors are protected through a GoFundMe Guarantee. These can only be hosted in certain countries, hence my involvement.

Although there are no fees to set up or run a campaign, there are small transaction charges applied to cover the Credit Card standard payment processor costs. This is less than most other fundraising sites. I will cover all of these fees when I make the final transfer to the hospital as my contribution towards their needs. What you donate is what the hospital will receive towards their appeal.

Please do your best to support, not least because of the fabulous prize. Christian might not be in a position to run such a generous raffle without their TLC.

    Many thanks,

    Matthew

Final list of participants, at 20:00 20/12/20. The discrepancy between ticket numbers and total funds donated is due to some members who wish to support Christian's hospital but not participate in the raffle.

Please advise myself or Mr Wooster if there are any obvious errors or if you have donated and do not wish to take part in the draw. Massive thanks for the outstanding support.

Hi Jamie, many thanks for the intention and sorry to hear that. No idea what's going on, for Jack/ Mr. Chef it seems to have worked well. If it's still not working, please get in touch with Matthew/ Mr Curta, think he'll be able to assist.

Many thanks Jack! For now you have very good chances to win the watch, as there's no other donation...

Bump for this as Romanian hospitals are a subject that have been (literally) close to my heart and Wooster is a top chap who has personally donated loads to UK based charities.

I'd like to second that in a big way, unstinting support and very generous.

If anybody prefers to donate via PayPal you only have to drop me a PM and I'll assist.

And don't forget that you can make a contribution to this extremely worthy cause of any amount even if you just wish to help out and not participate in the raffle.

Based on some wise suggestions I received, the participation for the raffle is now at 10 pounds (before it was 20). Hope this makes the participation to this raffle more enticing :)

I hope this is ok with the kind fellows who already donated. Of course, 20 pounds donated means two tickets for the raffle, etc.

We're past 200 pounds so far, and I hope lots of other donations will be collected. It really is for a very good cause... I've been treated in that particular hospital, the doctors are amazing, the conditions are decent (or good enough), but it reached a point where the capacity is overwhelmed by the number of people with serious forms of Covid. A modular unit making space for 12 more beds would make a big difference.

    Many thanks,
    Christian

I’ve just tried to donate and the gofundme page seems to freeze when you click ‘donate’? (Safari on iOS). Anyone have the same problem?

Edit: I just get 5 grey squares in a holding pattern at the bottom of the screen.....

Edit 2: I sacked off that page and donated £20 via Internet Explorer.

I think that the comment feature is hidden away at the end after "Now help spread the word", however we can almost always quickly match the donor to a username if they also post in this thread.

Nice one Christian and super generous but that sounds like a pretty extreme way to lose 15 kilos.

You don’t mind if I don’t follow your method of weight loss and just donate to the fund?

    £20 in from me.

We've made it past 500 pounds (there's also been a particularly generous donation - many thanks Steve!!), so things are looking promising. A big thank you to all who donated and a kind invitation for others to donate as well.

Yeah it's probably not compatible with Netscape.

It usually takes a few minutes for the donations to show up. If you receive a confirmation e-mail then it has gone through. GoFundMe was selected based on a recommendation from friends using it to fundraise for their daughter's inoperable brain tumour treatment (search GFM for Unbeatable Eva if you want to read a heart-wrenching story), as a reputable platform with very low fees. Apologies that it has been a bit clunky for some supporters, lesson learnt.

I realise it has been a difficult year for many, but a little bump in the hopes that this community can rally more support for Wooster's fundraiser - Christian has been extremely generous in his donations to other fundraisers

Going to be busy today but I’ll take a couple of tickets tonight. Wooster is a thoroughly decent guy and a credit to this community.

Two tickets bought just now. No problems with completing the transaction.

A score from me (that's 20 pounds sterling, if you didn't know) donated from me. By the way, to get the payment to pass I had to pause Ghostery, so perhaps other adblockers also need to be paused when making a payment.

Sorry that the payment platform is not quite friendly... But we're doing really good, many, many thanks fellows!

Thanks! No need for evidence, there is an automated e-mail and on the rare occasions where we've been unable to match a donor to a username the platform has a pretty efficient messaging system.

I've just donated. Though the hospital is hardly my local, a hospital is a hospital. Right?!.
Must admit that the watch doesn't particularly hit my fancy but that's irrelevant. All in a good cause. :)
