Was fun listening to his somewhat time warp style. Wouldn’t last with this PC generation.
He did a little commentating at the Masters last month and I noticed his voice sounded markedly different than what we have been used to for decades .... I thought he may have been ill.

A massive part of my childhood (brought joy into an otherwise difficult childhood) and I've continued to enjoy his golf commentary and coverage until just a few weeks ago. Sadly gone are the lovely off-the-wall comments ("new kitchen"), his calm and reassuring voice, and a wonderful depth of golf knowledge and anecdotes. RIP
Always came across has a better than decent guy and enjoyable to listen too, RIP.
Oh, sad to hear. Never much liked golf but he was one of those personalities who transcended his sport.
I loved his commentary style.
RIP

Oh no, how sad.
I loved him in A round with Alliss and those great Pro celebrity golf shows he hosted with Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller etc.
RIP.
Cheers,
Neil.
Much like Richie Benaud, this is another one of those soothing comfort blanket voices I'm going to really miss.
Such sad news, Peter was a gem of a commentator.
Not only did he know the game inside out but his one liners were a joy to listen to,
always had a story to share of his life in golf.
RIP Peter
RIP. Always loved listening to him. I was just reading how he got into commentating - apparently after a tournament in Ireland he was telling a friend on the plane home how badly he’d played. He received a letter from the BBC two weeks later from someone telling him he’d been in the seat behind and had listened to him regale his performance and found him fascinating to hear his story. That was in 1961.
Oh crap, just seen the news.
Having grown up with his commentary and his tv programmes, A Round with Aliss etc. I had the opportunity to caddie for a mate in his fourball at Elie Golf Club in 1995 with Peter, Sir Bobby Charlton and a representative of Bernard Matthews turkeys - B M sponsored wheelchairs for the disabled. Peter was as avuncular and friendly as he was when broadcasting, chatting freely to both my wife and myself, even to the extent of standing us lunch at his and Sir Bobby's table in the clubhouse after the round. Sad new indeed.
Such a wonderful voice, if was almost like he was in your living room just talking to you about golf.
This is worth a watch

RIP, a man of golf and words.

Spent many a happy Sunday afternoon dozing off listening to him, never picked a golf club in my life.
That really is a big loss for golf. He made the BBC coverage what it was. Always seemed to be so genuine, one of the true "voice of" commentators. RIP.
2020 is the year that just keeps giving.
He was a joy to listen to, much like Blowers on TMS and will be sadly missed by me.
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

I'm fortunate enough to have met him and it was a great experience.
His car number plate told you all about the man's humour - PUT 3 as he had the yips
RIP the greatest golf commentator EVER
A great sense of humour too
