Help reading a silver (plate?) hallmark

    Hi all
Been trying to decypher the hallmark on a lovely little silver candle holder recently purchased. The online guides seem to be pretty hard to use and I'm not sure which part of the mark denotes date.

I've got the Mappin bit OK but the rest is a mystery, appreciate any help anyone can offer on this!

Hi Robert, I'm far from being an expert but know a little bit. The Mappin stamp is almost certainly the maker (or retailer), correct.
But assuming it is silver plated and not silver the rest is unfortunately just gobbledygook designed to look like a hallmark.
This was common practice back in the day. Makers of quality silver plate items stamped faux hallmarks on them so that buyers who could not afford solid silver could still impress friends and guests who usually wouldn't know any different.

Silver plate marks are generally made up as they go along.
Mappin and Webb were a retailer rather than a manufacturer
Some quality plate like Princes Plate can be collectible, other plated items have value because of the designer (Christopher Dresser etc) rather than any intrinsic value.

    This might help

    Yep, that's the usual.

Mappin will always mean something to buyers though.

Given that it’s Mappin only, it might be pre-1902 when it became Mappin and Webb. Before that it was Mappin Bros, and before that one of the 4 Mappin Bros (who operated independently).

A photo of said 'hallmark' might help.
