    Military aircraft identification

Had a nice walk this afternoon near Donna nook (NE Linc's) this area is used for RAF/NATO training. There's often planes around and we dropped on several circling today, I got a few shots. I wondered what they were and a quick Google of images makes me think they were F15's, is there anybody in the know that can identify them?
    cheers

No Tornado's flying now. That looks to be USAF marking on right wing. At a guess F15 variant.

It is a USAF F15 (I think its an E version, - which is the combined strike and fighter version) F15Es of the 48th Strike Wing are based at Lakenheath

We generally go to see the air display when it's armed forces day or the air show but I have limited knowledge of the planes. I could identify the Eurofighter or Vulcan but that's about it. My camera was at max 200mm zoom so they were the best shots I could capture

    Surely that's a drone? There's no cockpit!

I'm sure you lot know but there's a brilliant story of one of these that managed to return to base and land with one wing virtually blown off.

Pah. The F-8 Crusader didn't even need one wing.

Lots of good footage of the "Mach Loop" on Youtube, and also google images using the same search.

Used to see Tornados running low up loch Tummel, Dunallister Water, Loch Rannoch and even though you saw them coming, and were prepared for it - the sheer intensity of the engines as they passed, caused you to involuntarily shiver/shake.

    That's just shoddy Mark

If I ever see them again, there's now a good chance I'll be able to get a closer shot than my 18-200 managed

I was lucky - perfect light and had my "Bigma" with me (Sigma 50-500).

At the time I had a Minolta Dynax 7D (6 mega pixel) which I've since swapped for a Sony Alpha 77 (24 mega pixel).

I took about 1000 photos that day - some turned out OK :-)

    Good stuff,
I've been toying with the idea of getting a longer lens for a long time now (previously including the Bigma) but never found justification
I finally thought sod it today and ordered a 150-600 Sigma, I'll keep my 18-200 as my walkabout and try the Sigma for when we go on our 'regular' shorter walks

There was an American family who used to swim at the club my son went to in 2000's, the father of who flew F15's out of Lakenheath. Contrary to popular opinion of US military personnel, he was a very nice quiet and unassuming chap who was thoroughly interestingly to chat with. Sadly, during that time a couple of flight crew from his wing died during a training mission, a reminder of how dangerous fast jets are.
At that time we were often treated to low flying (500 feet my a#%e) RAF Harriers sceaming over our house. I personally didn't mind but some local horsey people got their knickers in a twist about it (ours couldn't have cared less)

Great story! Thats whetted my interest - When they start again I'm really looking forward to seeing a few displays. I get lots of Chinooks and Apaches over my house (Thames) but nothing like fast jets! I've never been to IWM Duxford so that's a must for me as well.

It's been a few years since my last visit but they used to have an F15 as a gate guardian outside the American air museum. It is well worth a visit and the exhibits are quite varied. I took my son there to an air show many years ago and the highlight for me was a Spitfire with it's V12 merlin at full chat, it's like nothing else.
