What I never understand is why people share those moments all over social media, other than for the seeking of attention. Someone I know bought his daughter a Rolex for her 21st recently which obviously is great but felt the need to film the unboxing and share it on social media. He did the same when he bought his other daughter a Merc for her 18th recently. It was all about him being the big man and making sure people knew he’s done it.

100% attention seeking and very distasteful IMO.

I wonder if I should film my wife opening up her new Vostok on Xmas day? She actually wants an iPad but I reckon she'll be stoked anyway!

Everyone has their own level of what they're comfortable doing on social media, some people jealously protect their privacy, some actually make a living from posting stuff online.

Is it really worse than posting a Panerai or Rolex in the Friday thread?

Quite. Evidence suggests a dodgy PAM too, but I guess we'll never get a straight answer.

I agree, don't get it at all. I think you can kind of let them off in this instance slightly as watches are her job and she's a blogger but even so it surely would have been better as a private moment.

Yes, much. Can't compare the Friday thread or the forum in general to putting a Rolex up on FB etc. More than happy to share pics of watches here but wouldn't dream of it on social media.

She's a watch YouTuber. Her job is to react to watches and share the experiences with her audience.

There is zero showing off in this video, it's not even an expensive watch compared to much of what they show on that channel.

Absolutely agree, it is just a bit of harmless advertising, nothing more and nothing less. If you don't like it, watch something else.

Sorry for terming it ‘sad attention seeking’. My age is showing - I didn’t know what a YouTuber was but my daughter has explained it to me. Armed with this knowledge I think it is deliberate sad attention seeking.

I like Jenni Elle's watch channel - she comes across as being very down to earth and knowledgeable without being cringey. She's not acting up for the camera in the vid - looks like genuine gobsmackedness and gratitude for the present.

If it is not put on, it is cute. Regardless of showing off or not, I find it gratifying to see someone’s happiness and joy.
She already has a Rolex as we see she is double wristing with a Rolex on one wrist and Apple Watch on another.

Surely she should be genuinely happy every day, without the cattle prod of a gaudy expensive gift to encourage her?

Maybe that phrase means something different to what I'm familiar with, very happy to be enlightened if I'm off base!

I’m only 36 but I don’t get these kids and their social media obsession.

Good on her and congratulations on a new watch but the fact that she gives opinions on watches she borrows does not have to correlate with her husband making a rather vulgar and exhibitionist show of gifting. I’d rather that was kept private and she did a video later on what she liked and didn’t like about the watch.

Still, it’s not for me and I don’t have to watch it. More power to those who are into it, hope they got some enjoyment out of it.

Some are into it and enjoyed the video. Why would you prefer that it was kept private - given as you said, you ‘don’t have to watch it’. It seems a selfish attitude to suggest that only content you want to see should exist.

Odd question, the first paragraph was an expression of my personal opinion on the video. The second paragraph was a recognition that it was just that, a personal opinion and that others may disagree. I don’t think I said it shouldn’t exist, rather that I would prefer a balanced watch review. There are a lot of things I don’t enjoy and would rather were kept private, I’m not sure that means I’m selfish. Still, I respect your right to have your own opinion.

Can you imagine on another forum (or even on here) there's a woman making a joke about a 'husband' and someone being unhappy about describing 'husbands' in that way?

The replies to both of your comments seem to be telling you to lighten up a bit. Far easier for you if you do. Otherwise just ignore the poster and move on.

I'd make a joke now and say you're Mary Whitehouse's child and I claim my £5, but I know that it would be inappropriate :-)
I put a 1 word comment and there's been what feels like a dozen responses and now even a t-shirt. So yes... controversy!

Evidently people are touchy about the subject. Notice I haven't attempted to ostracise anyone, I pointed out a comment was inappropriate - that's all. While I agree it probably would be easier not to say anything, that doesn't mean it's not worth saying.

Never heard of Mary Whitehouse, but let's not rule it out

Actually like the video and more so the watch which has now given me an idea for a retirement present next year for my deserving wife. Wasn’t aware of this iteration of Rolex and as watch prices go I guess reasonable.
Hope there aren’t “lists” for these !?

I’ve not watched the unboxing vid, but I’ve seen some of her other vids and the interview the other day with Adrian from Bark&Jack, she’s really cool and likable. Social media & watches are how she makes money so I don’t have a problem with this - nobody is forced to watch it, good luck to her.

Not bothered either way by this video, I didn’t particularly enjoy it but I wasn’t offended by it either.

That said, I think she’s really likeable and has good content on her channel usually. I hope she sticks around.

Well who knew this would prove to be so divisive. Personally, I found both the video & her to be 100% unaffected & adorable, and I think on balance the majority agrees. It's led me to watch her YouTube channel, which is also surprisingly good. There's a dearth of non-annoying watch YouTubers, so it's nice to see.

  47. #47
...all for the ‘likes’. Not sure it quite cuts “adorable”.

  48. #48
Did she say “Oh s***” just before she opened the green Rolex box?
