I agree; posting the watch on the Friday thread was poor judgement, as was waiting two weeks before coming clean (youíd probably have been better off just leaving it tbh).

Beyond that, no harm done and indeed, itís a good reminder of just how good these fakes are these days.

I think you maybe bought it to see what an Explorer was like with maybe a view to buying a real one.
I see the logic in that and not something I would lose sleep over as no matter what I think of organised crime etc this stuff will still exist.
I'm fully aware of other people's strong feelings on this.
I just don't buy the back story that's al.

I can understand that some people don't like them, but has anyone really been disadvantaged by looking at a pic of what they may have thought was an Explorer on the Friday thread, that it later transpired wasn't? I suppose you could say that it erodes people's confidence that they're looking at genuinely nice watches and in that sense it was unfortunate, but there's no need to react like the OP had listed it on Sales Corner.

You imply fakes don't sit right with you and that it's consigned to the drawer, yet you go ahead and post it with pride on the Friday thread (without calling out it's an illegal fake). You need to decide where you sit - and remove the photo as you're selfishly putting Eddie at risk.

Disadvantaged, no. But it does feel grubby. This isn't a forum for fakes, it's supposed to be for genuine enthusiasts of genuine watches, not for the adoration, quiet or otherwise, of fakes. It calls into question the integrity of what we have here when fakes are quietly posted.

This is turning out a strange thread.. From a readers/my view it reads like this, you bought it, you are impressed with it (even though there is obvious faults but no one picked up on it if the Friday thread), you wanted to share it with the forum as again your very impressed by its quality so used the friend analogy in some reverse type psychology to share it with the forum?

I have no gripe with you and apologise if what I say above is wrong but thats how it reads especially with the previous Friday thread post..

  11. #61
Is this a stealth sales post?

    I`ll give you £100 for it,LOL.

Flatten it with a hammer, that's all fakes are worth.

  13. #63
Putting it in the Friday thread was a bit weird. Handset has terrible lume and the Mercedes proportions are a mile out.

If your friend really did give it to you just leave it in a drawer or give it back to him. If you bought it to see if you want the real thing exercise completed and time for the bin.

This forum can be overly judgemental sometimes in an unhelpful way. Obviously fakes are awful and a plague on this hobby we're all enthusiastic about, but isn't that all the more reason to be open about it and make people aware of the danger?

This is basically a public service announcement that these dodgy fakes exist, are cheap and are reasonably convincing these days. Nobody forced the OP to post this, he's not been caught out, he's obviously thought about it and is owning the mistake. He could have said nothing, but instead is sharing his story. Admittedly I'm a little sceptical of whether a 'friend' was actually involved in this scenario, but who knows and either way people make errors and learn along the path.

Trying to take shortcuts is human nature. Perhaps some folk who are new to the hobby will stumble across this thread and avoid stumbling into this same trap.

I wonder how many people can honestly say they've never had any involvement with a fake. My first Rolex was a fake, got it off a guy in Tunisia in 2001 who approached me selling watches on the street. I distinctly recall thinking it was the dogs b's. Dodgy piece of crap in retrospect, but I liked it at the time and wore it. No idea what I paid, but can't have been more than twenty quid. Over a decade later it emerged out of a box of odds and sods when my parents moved home and I had a good chuckle at it, was an awful submariner dial with a pepsi bezel. Mind you the bracelet was still probably better the most Seiko's I've had since I had good fun dissecting it to have a look inside before chucking it in the bin where it belonged.

Buyer beware - it's exactly why I personally wouldn't trust myself to buy a used Rolex privately, as I know my own limitations and even if it's a trusted seller I can't be sure they haven't been bamboozled themselves when they bought it. Others will no doubt be more confident in verifying authenticity, and worryingly many will probably overestimate their own ability to do so.

Yep he posted a year or so back about his brothers fake panerai again with the statement he would have nothing to do with fakes himself...

My take on this is I donít for one second buy the story of a friend buying it you. The fact you then actually passed it off without comment in the Friday thread is wrong and worrying with regards to trust in you.

Have you ever posted a picture of a fake Rolex (a DSSD, I think) on the Friday thread?

Not looking to kick the OP who has a long history of ďmoaningĒ about his financial circumstances. I didnít think the Explorer was real when you posted on the Friday thread but as my TZ pals know I know nothing about Rolex but the picture didnít sit right with me.

I donít buy the story OP but maybe I am too cynical.

I notice it only took one post before the usual TZ-UK fake-watch hysteria came to the fore and it was compared to ďchild pornĒ.

Iím not saying fakes arenít bad and I appreciate the criminality then are associated with but Iím always face-palming when I read these threads.

If the OP posts in a Friday thread my first instinct is to double check itís actually friday. There is not a single member on this forum I distrust more. This is yet another red flag in a string of red flags that runs back farther than my deteriorating memory.

I suspect it was posted two weeks ago on the Friday thread to see if it could pass for real. Maybe not for any criminal reason, just for the OPs kicks. I’ve got no axe to grind with the OP it’s just very odd.

I was involved in anti counterfeiting from the late seventies until about 2001/2002. Counterfeiting is a nasty industry where the damage is not seen or even heard about by those who buy the fake goods. It seems a victimless crime but it is responsible for thousands upon thousands of children and adults being forced into sweatshops in totally inhumane conditions.

If you spent just one day sitting on some of the committees I sat on, you would never facepalm again.

Believe me I know because I’ve had it explained how evil it is in a patronising way hundreds of times on TZ.

I also wonder how dissimilar they are to Foxconn (the Apple factory) where the Chinese had to install anti-suicide nets for the workers. But that’s legal, so it’s all fine to keep posting on these threads on your iPhone/iPad. I doubt any of this is black and white, merely all dubious shades of grey.

Reading some of the other responses it seems the OP has a history that doesn't help his case here though. But hey, what happened happened, I'd rather him be honest about it then not. Just my 2 cents.

Respectfully, I disagree with your sentiment.

If we refuse to broach the subject on genuine enthusiast forums, where should those less familiar find out about the dangers and false economy of fakes? Shall we send them to the 'replica' forums? If folk were in any way encouraging each other or sharing sources I'd 100% agree with you, but I just don't see any of that here in this topic.

But as I said before, that's just my 2 cents. Folk are free to disagree.

So what your saying, is that I should drink and drive. Come here two weeks later and tell that a friend of mine got me drunk and made me do it and I donít recommend it for anyone.

Thanks I wasnít aware of my join date, Iíll be sure to keep my thoughts to myself Just teasing, Iím sure you didnít mean that.

My opinion - if topics were never discussed more than once this would be a very quiet place. For better or worse this is the OPs experience so it added something new to the conversation thatís not covered elsewhere. No different to someone adding their personal perspective on a brand, release or style etc.

My last post on this as itís going a bit off topic.

Havenít you just described the majority of Drink Driving awareness campaigns?

Someone did X and Y happened. Be aware of what happened to someone else (be it fictional or otherwise) and avoid it happening to you.

Obviously Iíve not advised anyone to drink and drive (or buy fakes), I assume that was a miss type as otherwise itís an absurd thing to suggest.

Was about to say the same. TTC repeatedly posts about how poor he is (nothing wrong with that, but he’s pretty vocal about it) so the Explorer seemed unlikely.

As for TMS / Vicky, who really put me off this place when I first joined as s/he was so annoying and rude and yet seemed to be the forum darling that everyone seemed to love... but I can never forget at least one member here lusting over his/her photo before she came out as a he! Incidentally there’s one regular poster here who has more than a little similarity to TMS’s posting style

    Fakes / Replicas

I think that comments about TTC mentioning his financial position are out of order and have no place in this thread. I have some understanding of his situation in that regard (which is nobodyís business but his own), and I have no doubt that any of his prior comments are both understandable and genuine in.

Whilst David did post a fake photo on the Friday thread, he did make it clear in post number 1 here that he has been wrestling with whether or not to start this thread since he received the watch, he has now deleted the photo and recognised publicly that putting it there in the first place was an error of judgement.

I am not comfortable with this thread turning into a public flogging. As may be apparent. I have had dealings with David in the past and would not hesitate to do so again.

No one has said otherwise. But when he makes it a continual subject of postings, on a public forum where discussion is the only point, over many years, then he makes it relevant. So you lease donít misconstrue what I and another poster said.

I have always regarded TTC as a decent guy and a genuine enthusiast and never occurred to me for a second that heís dodgy. For the record.
