    Binocular recommendations.

This is an area that I am not savvy in and know that there are lots of members on here that will be. I am looking for a decent pair of binoculars for my dad for Christmas.

Can anyone recommend me a decent set that would be suitable for walks and hikes? Smallish ones, not the 2 telescopes connected together ;-)

In no way related to them but I bought from

    https://www.strathspey.co.uk/

10*50 marine. They are in my limited experience a great pair. Big but great.

Hmm. Pretty much everything out of stock this date.

What's your price point OP? Size 8X30 sounds suitable?

depends on budget, the good ones are expensive and you tend to get what you pay for with the known quality brands.

nikon, pentax and Celestron i would look at in the £40 - £70 range

We've had this a few times before so I recommend using the search function (I've directly benefited from doing the same). I would pay particular attention to any contribution from Dunk (sundial).

    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

    Opticron.
Wide choice to choose from at pretty good prices.
Aftersales & out of guarantee service is second to none and very well priced.

Thanks for the opinions. I did di a search on here which threw up some old SC posts, there were a pair of Leica at £450 which would have been ideal but alas they are much more expensive from anywhere else.

    Thanks

I have a pair of Nikon Monarch 7's and they seem pretty good to me. They aren't the really compact bins though, but great for what we need here - which is similar to what you describe.

I have a pair of Leica Trinovid 10x25 which are perfect for walking/hiking. I used to have some Olympus 8x42 which were lovely, but just too heavy to lug around so were part-ex for the Leica. Had them about 5 years now and wouldn't swap them for anything.

If they’re for walks and hikes make sure to get the armoured ones.

I can see why you might be attracted to a 10x magnification, but with a 25mm lens the exit pupil will be 2.5mm, which is smaller than average pupil dilation. IMHO the 8x32 model is a much better bet for general use. I know that my Nikon 9x25s can be a little shaky. Also the 32mm version will let in more light and give clearer image. I've been looking at replacing the Nikons and the Leica Trinovid HD 8X32 are top of the list.

All binoculars are '2 telescopes hinged together' ... providing one image for each eye ... thus when properly set up with correct interocular distance and with diopter control adjusted optimally, the instrument enables a 3D image.

Small binoculars are OK but medium sized are easier to use.

If you really, really insist on a small binocular and prepared to buy s/h:

... but would be best for your father to try them ... dealer allows 15 day returns

I have the Nikon action 10-22x50. I find them really good at 10x but as you increase to 22x you definitely need support. I use a mono pod if bird watching. They are quite bulky too.

^^^ The problem with zoom eyepiece binoculars is that they are impossible to collimate 100% throughout the zoom range and binocular technicians are usually reluctant to try and adjust / repair them.
Regular non-zoom binoculars are a much preferred by most observers.

    Binocular recommendations.

Yes you are correct, once zooming in, line of sight does go out slightly. Can be annoying. But they were cheap at £59 from Jessops about 6 years ago.

It’s a very nice pair of binoculars. Crystal clear and quite dazzling!! But the light for the compass doesn’t work so I’ll try new batteries. I don’t believe there is any night Visio except for the compass and I think new batteries will probably fix that.
