I thought it was Karl Lagerfeld who was (in)famous for that sort of thing?

Jim.
I’m aware of Gianni Agnelli wearing his watch like that - hadn’t seen the Lagerfeld pic before.
Here’s Agnelli in his pomp.
Or you could go full Van (Morrison), who wore his watch outside his cuff and on the inside of his wrist.

Get to A&E ASAP, the bang on the head you've had seems to be serious.

you have not gone full Gianni unless the arms of your specs are worn outside your ears.
I had associated the 'Gianni' with Versace, not Agnelli, hence the Lagerfeld comeback...

Makes the watch look like some kind of electronic tag. Normally worn on the ankle. Have they been naughty?
Was he the guy who had his shirts tailored with a cut out cuff so he (and others) could see his watch?
I watched a great documentary about gianni agnelli and they mentioned that he was the one that started the trend of wearing the watch on the outside of the shirt. Fashion designers like lagerfeld and Valentino admitted in the show that they copied this after seeing it on agnelli. He was also well known for wearing the thin bit of his tie longer than the wider bit

It's an even earlier trend

Sprezzatura? Or just silly?
Yes it’s the sprezzatura imperfect way of dressing that’s done to look like no effort has taken place
