The joy of painting . BBC 4

Anyone watched this guy Bob Ross?

It's on at the moment. If you've had a rough day and want chilling out, put this on.

    The guy was amazing!

Used to watch it many moons ago. Soothing, calming, and fascinating seeing his paintings develop.
Do believe he passed away back in the 90’s...
Fantastic head of hair as well...

He’s great to watch. I didn’t think tonight’s painting was his best. There have been loads of episodes on iPlayer plus a documentary on him.

I know nothing about art or this guy. Was just flipping through channels and came across this. The bloke was awesome. Puts me in a trance for half an hour.

Been watching Bob for at least 20 years on odd satellite channels - iirc he was US Air Force up in Alaska where he started painting the mountains seen all around, hence them featuring in much of his paintings. The afro makes him!

In a similar style is Norm of New Yankee Workshop which ended maybe ten years ago

He was a brilliant guy, and died far too young.

Anybody who makes you think 10 mins into an episode that you too could paint has got to be some kind of genius.

Bob is awesome. Just when you think he's messed it up, he goes in with some titanium white or a bit of van dyke brown and rescues it - genius!!

    Dear Bob, a youtube legend.

I believe his son followed in his footsteps and can be seen on youtube

I'm in my (very) late 30's and grew up watching him as a kid on cable as well... it's just the most easy going, gentle, enjoyable TV going. If you've ever had a bad day and just need an escape, the Joy of Painting is the ultimate tonic. I adore it.

Love this show, and the squirrel!

Apparently he had his straight hair permed to save money when he left the USAF. He then became famous and was stuck with the trademark hair style which he hated.

He had a really soothing presentation and seemed such a nice bloke.

His paintings were very formulaic, seen one you've seen them all but I really think the art side of the show was secondary.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Found this program by accident recently & we now watch a few times a week, even the kids watch it now

His art is going to be featured on a new set of cards for Magic The Gathering

He's on now folks. He's just made a happy tree then give him a friend.

We don't make mistakes. We have happy accidents...

There was a documentary on BBC during the summer about Bob, the show and production of it. I was riveted. The unwanted perm featured. Still on iPlayer.
