Thermal Socks.....what do we know ?

    Hey Peeps,

I work outdoors, My feet are getting older and also getting colder. I wear a pair of Dr. Martens finest boots. I need some new socks for everyday work use.

Bit of an odd request but what do people wear ?

    Serious question.

    Cheers

I got these recently for outdoor activities and they're excellent, probably the best warm socks I've ever had - https://www.bergfreunde.eu/darn-toug...walking-socks/

I bought these a while back for walking/hiking and they've been toasty and comfortable:

Merino wool mix, and they're in the sale:

I like the de-feet woolie boolies and the Finisterre thick socks are good too but the absolute best I have ever worn are Dahlgren Alpaca from the U.S they are robust not like alpaca bed socks as they have merino and other fibres in them, bought some from TK-Maxx years ago and they are still going strong, can’t get them here and if I ever go to the states i’ll stock up.

Another for Woolie Boolies, they were great for cycling in all temperatures so started wearing them on the building sites where they lasted about 2 minutes but they were toasty while they lasted

Keep an eye out for some on SC, the heel and toe area might be a bit thread bear and sized for Tom Thumb but you might save a quid over buying new

If you want a normal sock (not a thick wooly one) the Sealskinz socks need looking at.

I have heavy winter socks I used to use when welding (your feet are always freezing when welding outdoors) but the wooly socks make the boots tight.

The sealskinz ones are sort of a bit heavier than normal sock thickness so the boots dont get pinchy.

Get theirs made by the Bradford sock co. They are great socks, had loads of them and the customer service from Mark was brilliant.

I rate bridgedale though for hiking

It’s the boots that are at fault not the socks. Stopping circulation is not going to keep your feet warm!
I have summer and winter footwear to allow me to wear the right thickness socks, you need a new pair of boots half a size bigger.

I suffer from cold feet despite being otherwise warm, and my favourites are Smartwool. They always appear at or near the top of ski sock comparisons. I also have Bridgedales, which are good.

I really suffer from cold feet. Tried loads of different ones over the years, all promising to keep my size 10's nice & toasy..fancy fabrics, fancy names etc..nothing really worked until my wife found some 100% wool numbers from Go Outdoors. They are superb. No added fabrics/materials just 100% wool. Cheap too, although they do wear out fairly quickly so I bought 20 pairs and when one pair shows signs of wear my wife's handy with a darning needle. I don't know if they are still available (I may have cleared the stock) but definitely worth hunting down..come in a pack of two for about £9

I do a lot of fishing so I’m out in the cold for long periods especially at this time of year, the most important thing is that if your active your feet Will sweat and you will get cold so dependant on your activity I would consider taking multiple.e thin socks and changing them, however if you are static as I tend to be then merino wool socks are a great starting point

I rate sealskinz which I rate very highly and they have a huge range they are great but expensive ,simply fpr the waterproof qualities alone for me they are worth it.

I also own icebreaker Merino products that I’ve used for many years, the higher the number, 200, 260, 320 the thicker and warmer the product rating will be

Smart wool mountaineering socks are another very good sock for out and out warmth they are my favourite

    Good luck

Probably. Get some gtx lined boots OP and you'll always complain about how hot your feet are instead. I've got two pairs of Timberland boots and one is lined with something thermal, I never wear them as my feet get too hot.

Absolutely agree with this. Far better boots out there for not a lot more money.

As for sock's, I've just started using Keela glacier socks. I was actually put on this brand by a guy in the armed forces who swears by their clothing. Not had a chance yet to get them a good work out but so far my feet haven't been cold.

Classic or mountain? I usually favour bamboo socks, but these look good. Just for regular use. Mountain are maybe too thick/warm.

For those recommending Nordic Socks, count yourselves lucky. I ordered 10 pairs off the back of this thread, 2 pairs of which arrived with loose elastic threads. No response from the company, and they won't post my reviews. The socks look pretty, but first impressions are poor quality and crap customer service. I would avoid https://uk.thenordicsocks.com/ if I were you.

Note: the e-mails from this company direct you to their store at NorwaySocks.com (website now dead) - who have rather shocking reviews including my most recent one, here: https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/norwaysocks.com. [Quite a contrast to the supposedly great reviews on their other site above.]

Just my tuppence for those thinking of ordering (albeit most now sold out).

I, as the OP, ordered 5 pairs of the Nordic socks. They were way late in arriving and they're a total load of $h1te.

I didn’t as I very rarely trust anything that is advertised on face book and with them not having a high percentage of wool I gave them a miss. They are too cheap fir decent socks

Oh dear…. I recommended them and have brought some more on the back of the ones I had which are well made and very comfortable - I have some on feet now…. I liked the designs and they are pretty warm…

I am so sorry that others have had a poor experience :-(

I ordered mine Black Friday and they still have turned up…

Ordered mine on Black Friday too and they turned up today. Not sure whose fault the delay - seemed to lie in a RM DC for a few days.

Haven't had the chance to try yet but after reading some of the comments here they may now be given as a present.

I wonder if it’s a mix? I know my way around a sock and I felt the quality was good - thick and elastic was fine…. Nice warm and woolly

    Hence ordering some more…

I am really disappointed that others have had duds

Well... the socks I ordered from nordicsocks have finally turned up, and actually I think they're quite good and will be fine for everyday use by the intended recipient.

Delivery could have been a bit quicker though...

    Oh dear.

Like others I'm usually pretty cautious about these Instagram sellers but I was suckered in by their pretty pictures and having consistently chilly feet during winter Lockdown thought it was worth a punt.

Even got some for the Mrs as a stocking filler.

Only after purchasing did I notice the terrible 16 day delivery timescale so tried to cancel immediately the next day well before dispatch but they refused.

I've had a loose update about the order being dispatched but don't expect them to get them soon and from reading above I'm not expecting a great products.

Hopefully in the long run it will save me from never buying again from such shitty online retailers.

    Humbug.
