There is never a point to such threads- particularly when the audience cannot even differentiate between popular watches that they don’t get and their pet. peeves

It's almost me too. A Nautilus for me loses out to many other watches in the same segment. I feel exactly the same about Daytonas. I don't hate either of them just there is nothing about them that means I would have one over most of the obvious competition, so I can't appreciate their popularity. It would be an incredibly long time and a lot of watches until I got to the point where they would ever fill a gap for me.

Lockdown must be getting to me.

    I generally don't buy what I don't like.
I certainly don't buy what I can't afford. That probably includes most PP, JLC, Daytona and anything else over £20k. Therefore I've taught myself not to drool over things in that price bracket.

So "popular" has largely become an irrelevance for me.

Other confessions - Quartz is OK at the right price.

We would need more Chinese members as I believe that is their biggest market by far.

I was going to mention the Clownmaster, but surely it doesn't qualify as 'popular'?

That seems slightly odd. I mean, it's easy to understand someone just subjectively not liking them (prefer mechanical; don't like plastic etc) but surely it's not hard to see the point of them given that functionally they can do far more than most any other watch, in an unbreakable case, many self-synching, many even without batteries, for peanuts. I don't myself need these functions or spend much time wearing one but I can still see the point of them.

There is much in popular watches that I cannot stand.
The most obvious example is the Seamaster, those skeleton hands are the most horrid thing ever to adorn a watch.
There is much in WISdom that I also do not appreciate.
I think Genta's designs are almost all horrible.
    AP, PP, RM. No thanks
I cannot see the attraction in Nomos, they look increbibly dull to me.
And I see very little merit in AnOrdain.

But I am very glad we all have differing taste, otherwise I would have no-one to despise or laugh at.

    Any G-shock.

Usually some black (or garish coloured) plastic oversized monstrosity.

I associate it with poor taste.

For me it’s the black dial Rolex Sub, just find them rather bland now.

Casio Frogman. Always seems better in pictures than on my wrist, where it looks monstrous and silly.

In fact, any G Shock that isn't a 5600 (or derivation) and isn't black plastic. I've tried, but... no.

IWC Mark. Yes including the XII and XV.

I’m going to add metal G-Shock squares.

Big shiny (relatively) expensive things that pick up scratches and swirls, which seems silly for a beater. I prefer mine black, plastic and cheap!

Popular watches that don’t do it for you?

    Panerai
    Rolex Daytona
Rolex Skydweller - I mean, WTF is that...
    The new Submariner
A lot of g-shocks (not all)
    Tudor BB GMT
    Those very black-and-white Damasko
    Anything with a date at 4 o’clock

Popular watches that don’t do it for you?

Popular watches that don’t do it for me? Well, in no particular order:

Rolex Sub (boring, ubiquitous, too small)
Rolex Daytona (cramped dial, hard to tell the time, too small)
Rolex Yachtmaster (ugliest bezel in the world)
    Rolex Kermit or Hulk (garish)
Rolex Skydweller (unbelievably ugly, who designed it?!)
Panerai Radiomir (without the Luminor crown guard it just looks like any old watch)
Omega Speedmaster Professional (too hard to wind, getting it wet is traumatic, too small)
Breitling Aerospace (too light, too small, too difficult to use the functions via the crown)
Seiko SKX (a triumph of nostalgia over capability, vastly eclipsed by the Turtles)
G-Shocks apart from the full metal (plastic, ugly)

    Panerai

I don't hate them but they do nothing for me. Absolutely nothing.

    6-digit Rolexes

They are ok but the 5-digits are SO much better looking.

  23. #123
Tried 2 speed masters but always moved them on very quickly, always found the manual wind annoying and the crown is snug...

Still wouldn’t mind a Ultraman or the Ck2998 though...

I love panerai I don’t like speedmasters, too much going on, on the dial for me, probably why I like the simplicity of panerai.

Would have to be Speedmasters. Had one briefly and it did absolutely nothing for me. I do appreciate the heritage though.

Over the years I’ve owned a number of different Rolexes and everyone of them was always missing something. I couldn’t say what though. The one I was the most happy with was the SD4000 but even that didn’t completely hit the spot. I came to the conclusion that I was buying the brand and moved on.

One of reasons I like Panerai so much is how diverse the range is. I also like how they divide option because in my mind that tells me they have a strong design.

    Seiko Willard.

    I don’t get it.

    Why does a cushion-cased watch with a 4 o’clock crown need guards? It’s like a weird verruca.

  29. #129
Nothing from modern: Rolex, Omega, Breitling and most recently added to the list, Tudor too.

For some reason I find the designs uninspiring and too diluted with new versions coming out like clockwork with small changes but fairly large price increases.

I have to say brands like Longines, Tissot, Timex, Hamilton etc have gained props fro me for focusing on re-issuing vintage models they used to have.

To protect the crown. Seems obvious.

Not sure on your price value, but Patek's Nautilus was never a favorite of mine, but people are willing to pay through the nose to get one

TBH the vast majority of the most popular watches do very little for me (with exceptions of course) so too many to list.

I guess that's why my watch collection throughout its many changes over the years has been mostly made up of unpopular watches. Works in my favour though as liking less desirable stuff has often meant easier pick-ups.

    Anything:
    - With a magnified date
    - With more than a few numbers on the bezel

Which probably make the Explorer 2 my most disliked popular watch as it's managed to tick both boxes.

I will take that 4500v if you are throwing it away. Agree, horrible watch, will do you a favour and give you 10k.

Modern speedmaster moon watches (I like the Ed white and CK2915, hence bought the 60th anniversary), but I don’t like the asymmetric case (crown guard) of most modern speedies.

    Modern Daytonas & explorers

    AP offshores..

That's the whole point of them for me! Love a bit of in your face garish amidst being totally boring with my watch choices.

The Daytona is popular but doesn't do it for me at all.
I find them quite hard to read, particularly the black 116500.

I'm afraid it doesn't help. I have distance glasses but they mean I can't see brillaintly closer up. The hands are too skinny and blend into the dial for me.
Same issue with some champagne dial gold hand datejusts

Any Rolex Sub. I've had a few and as a tool watch they just don't cut it. There are far better options out there at a fraction of the price.

Rolex don't do it for me ,just don't aspire to own one.
Speed master not sure what all the fuss is about.
Didn't like Panerai until I just bought a 285 and now I'm in love.
    Big chunk of a watch.
