    Fireplace removal

Day off today so thought I’d tackle the back bedroom fireplace
I’m taking down the whole chimney (yes it’s safe and done correctly)
Each of the 2 bedrooms had a cast iron fire place in
I renovated the one in my room in situ but this one coming out
Was a bit of hard work but looks fab

It does indeed - we have some like that in our house.

Getting the horrid 1970's paint off and then Stovaxing them brought them up beautifully.

    Great job!
So clever my foot fell off.

Nice job. I’ve restored a few of these.

This one I went for a traditional look:

And this one a bit more radical:

Timely thread. We’re unsure whether to renovate our old fireplaces, not sure on their age or originality to house - or to replace with a different, modern option.

Is there value in these old fireplaces? Unsurprisingly the fireplace shop we went to said No! I doubt their objectivity though :D

I suppose it depends on their condition and size
I’d say yes - I’m pleased I did the one in my bedroom
It took me a couple Of days but we’ll worth it
Mine we definitely original - the cr*p that was behind them

Tatty ones in need of refurbishment can be picked up for between a few tens of pounds for the smaller plainer bedroom fireplaces to a few hundred for bigger fancier ones. Marble surrounds and original tiles add a big premium Dealers sell beautifully restored ones for hundreds running into thousands.

Cleaning them up is best done by sending them to be sandblasted unless you are a masochist for a really dirty horrible job. But DIY refinishing and fitting can be quite therapeutic and fun- and can save a lot of money.
